Hello everyone!

my name is Kevin, and i found this site by searching around on google trying to find out info on old boats.

Yesterday, i bought a boat shell, that had been given to the previous owner, so they didnt know the year, make or model... so i was hoping someone here would be able to help me out here.

Pretty much the only things i know about it are that its a closed bow, V-Hull (or something like that), about 19 feet ... and im pretty sure its mid 70s...

The hull appears to be in good shape (at least on the outside), and the floor appears to be decent. Most of the rest of the interior has to go, and new be built (most of the wood is rotted).

Pretty much what i want to know is year/make/model, and if there is an easy(ish) way to test if the floor and whats underneath it are worth saving, or if i need to completely rebuild it...

It has no motor right now, but the transom is setup for an outboard. I would love to convert it to an I/O, or maybe a Jet-Ski motor, but i dont know how feasible this is...

This is my first boat, and will be my girlfriends and mine project for as long as it takes. Cost is an issue, because our budget isnt very high. But i plan to build this thing to last for a long time, so i wont be "cheaping out" wherever possible.

Thank you in advance for any help...

Kevin

Hello m8..

Should be able to get that info from your CF numbers. Maybe try your secretary of state..

Looks nice. Well after seeing all the before and after pics on this sight I keep imagining what the finish product is gunna look like. You found the right place. New here myself but best I can say is just start reading. When you find a thread that is to your interest, scroll down and you will find several similar thread links. After seeing what other folks have done your gunna want to tear that whole thing apart.

Have Fun

Re: New to Boat Resto...

we already have a good idea of what we want to do to this boat... and from what i can tell, its in better condition than a lot of the ones iv seen on here to start with (im pretty sure there isnt any mold, just dryrot in the wood...)

as far as HIN and CF numbers, At this point i only have the CF, because I cant find a HIN. Which means, either this boat is older than 1972 (pre Federal Boad Safety Act), or the Transom has been replaced at some point in this boats history. Either seems just as likely given this boats age...

I guess ill have to make a trip to the DMV and see if i can do anything based on the CF alone...

Still open for ideas from you folks on my questions however...

Welcome aboard..

First I'll go on record as guessing mid or early 60's on that boat..Sorry no idea as to make or year..Cool lil boat though..

As far as your questions..

There is absolutely no way to convert her to a I/O (most want to go the other way) that I am aware of..Get a reasonable year OB to hang on her, thats what she was designed for.

For testing the deck...You can drill a few small holes and see what the shavings/dust looks like on your drill bit..black and wet = rip out the entire deck..

Are there ant soft spots on the deck? When you step on the deck it is solid underfoot everywhere? Any place that isn't is an immediate spot to start cuttin..

Make sure you check the transome area as well..look for the obvious, cracks, any prior patch work that you can see?

Others that know far more than I do will chime in...

Enjoy your resto!

hi.....welcome to i boats...:)

best boating forum in the world.

nice boat.....early to mid 60's is correct.

coming from an absolute nut .....forget the i/o idea.......it will be far too expencive....(minimum 6k)

but im a little concerned here.....your on a budget.....what kind of budget?

you are gonna need a minimum of a 65 hp for that boat...(and thats under powered for a 19)...that is around a grand.

upholstery ....if you diy.....around 300......

however......if the deck is rot and/or the transom.....you are better off to sell the trailer and get another boat with a motor....(search core sample)

dont get me wrong....im the first to yell restore it.
but you gotta have not only the cash budget....but the time and space budget as well.

if you do decide that you want to restore the boat to usable condition....we are all here to help and we can walk you right thru it.

cheers

Re: New to Boat Resto...

The boat might not be the bigger problem,
I bought a boat last yr,
seller said he lost title and gave me a detailed bill of sale.
Enviro police aren't interested in that, you have to jump through their loops.

What they wanted a was a copy of the sellers driver license, seller refused to cooperate, I tricked him into signing for a registered letter and the enviro police accepted that as proof of address.
They issued a new title, boat is 1974.

Your photo's are great and make that the boat look like a doable, but I'm curious about the distance between the end of the windshield and the beginning of the splashwell. One other thing to consider is condition of trailer they sure don't give the galvanized ones away around here.

Good Luck

pic number 4 is the splashwell...

that is the area in front of the transom...(the back of the boat where the motor bolts on to)

with out board motors....it is needed because the water comes right up to thahe back of the boat when you slow down fast...this area catches that water and drains it back into the lake.

bow = front or pointy area of the boat.
deck= floor or the area in front of your windsheild covering your bow.
transom =back of the boat where the motor is bolted on to.
stringers= longitudnal supports between the hull and the deck
sole= see deck
foam= the water sucking carp that is in most newer boats....(not yours)
hull=the main structure of your boat.....the part that goes into the water
cap= the top portion of the boat, it covers the hull

its that simple....there is more....but i dont wanna overload ya.

cheers

i measured it today, the distance between the end of the windshield and the splashwell is 56"... and the whole boat is 18'3" ... what is the significance of the distance between windshield and splashwell?

None really but that's about the only easy acess you have to get on board. Main reason I asked was cause your pictures make the cocpit look huge. Looks like a well designed boat for a serious fisherman with about 5 to 6 feet of usable cockpit.
