i have a new 4.3 merc in my 1990 trophy what is the operating temp it is all over the place when i first start it it will worm up and shoot up to 200 i turn it off and start it and go and it drops down to between 170 185 and hold there i replace the guage and it still does it i checked the temp on the water pump and it reads 165 when the gauge reads 185 wtf any have sugestion

I believe you should have a 160 thermostat installed, So with every thing working right it should not really go over 180 max, And Normaly the gauge will stay around 175 on a normal working gauge. And the engine it"s self noramly will stay around 165-170. If you are hitting 200 degress then the warnning horn should be going off if you have one and it is working right.
