Ok guys i cant bring my motor back to the shop so im looking here for advice. I have a 93 30hp that just came out of the shop. It sat up for about 4 years and didnt run when i got it. Here is what was done

new impeller and housing
repaired Exhaust leak on the side of the block
Replaced lower unit oil
Carb rebuild
new ignition pack
new plugs
some ignition parts under the flywheel

Took the motor to a small lake to test it before heading to the bigger lakes just incase i had any problems and thank god i did.

When i got there the motor ran great. Ran it at idle for a while then started to open it up. It ran perfect. Then all of a sudden at WOT it bog down went back up boged down a second time then died. I started it back up and it ran great for 30 min. Although i went to run the motor i did bring a rod just incase. I saw a place i wanted to fish and stopped to fish a while. When i was ready to leave the motor started right up. Then the bogging problem returned and i could not keep the engine running. If you start it up it will sit and idle great. As soon as you open it up it will do the same thing. Bogg down go back up and then kill. It will start right back up no problem, but as soon as you try to run it it boggs down and dies.
I have a trip planned to caddo lake on sunday so im hoping it is something simple since i had all this work done to get it running right. My father in law seems to think that it is a fuel problem perhaps with the tank or the hose. I asked if it would run good at idle he said yes but if there is a problem with the hose or the tank it would cause the bogging because it is starved for fuel.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Your F-I-L is probably correct (this time ) :D
Check the fuel lines and connections, make sure the tank vent is open, and make sure the fuel line was not put on backwards (arrows on primer bulb point toward engine)

I would hate to think that the carbs are clogged up already.....

could also be the flywheel not tight or a woodruff key snapped or about to. I just had to replace mine. Motor would run great then all of a sudden it wouldnt.

I wouldnt think there would be a flywheel issue since it was removed and replaced by a mechnic. I am going to buy a new gas tank and hose tomorrow. Is there an easy way to check if this is the problem before i go buy a new tank and hose. The hose on there now is brand new. Are there any other things i should check as well.

One quick check is to pump the primer bulb when it's dying to see if it picks up.

mechanics do make mistakes they aint perfect. Just a suggestion. I just replaced a woodruff key for 55 cents. A lot cheaper than a tank and hose. Cant see the tank being an issue my self. Or the hose if its brand new.

did you open the vent on the fuel tank? the pump cannot pump fuel out of a vacuum.

Ok i just finished replacing all of the gas lines. They looked pretty ruff, and given the situation with ethanol eating up the old line i needed to do that anyway. Im about to take it out to the lake for a test run. Wish me luck. I post the results when i get back.

If you still had the old fuel lines on the motor after the previous carb rebuild, you very well could have something blocking the high speed jet in the carb. The old fuel lines may have had some pieces of crud in them from old fuel, and running it again may have sucked them loose and into the carb.

This guy's motor starts all of the time and runs at idle. Yours just died completely all of a sudden. Not the same thing, and most likely not the same cause. I hope you used a Johnson/Evinrude key and not a Home Depot one.

Re: 93 30hp Johnson

Ok guys just got back. The motor started with no problem but going to WOT it bogged down and died again. I check the bulb and low and behold it is loseing prime at WOT. I started it back up and held the bulb in my hand and i was able to stay wide open as long as i gave the bulb a little squeeze every few seconds. So i have come to the conclusion that either it is the tank or the hose. Given that i just bought a brand new hose to connect the tank to the motor I am thinking maybe it may be the tank itself. Do tanks go bad? Or should i be looking at the fuel pump perhaps. Thanks for all you guys help so far.

Normally, if it picks up when the bulb is squeezed it indicates a fuel pump problem. Squeezing the bulb every couple of seconds takes the place of the fuel pump function.

or an air leak problem, aftermarket fittings look alike, but aren't.

Re: 93 30hp Johnson

My experience has shown that any aftermarket hose or tank or connection is the first suspect.

If you don't want to buy a new tank or hose see if someone will lend you a genuine OMC brand tank and hose.

I'd bet you lunch that your problem is with the tank and or hose, especially if it either are aftermarket.

I do a lot of long distance trips by river and can't risk fuel related problems. I have gotten rid of all of my aftermarket hoses and tanks and replaced them with genuine OEM parts.

Since reverting to OEM I have had no problems related to fuel.

Also, don't hesitate to put old fuel (more than several weeks old) in your road vehicle and always use fresh fuel doped up with Sta-Bil.
