1977 Johnson 35 HP

Hey Im new to this forum but ive been reading around and this place rocks so far!

Anyways, i Have a 35hp Johnson 1977 Outboard Motor. Has a brand new lower unit everything replaced, just replaced the Head Gasket. After all this the motor ran perfect for a couple times on the lake.

So now when i start it up it idles fine, i can move it up to about 1/4 Throttle and everythings smooth then at about 1/2 it starts to rev real high and seems not to be catching or something like that. At WOT it revs real high as well and shakes somewhat. So any suggestions on what to check, anything would help. thanks guys.

the motor revs, but goes no where. either shift linkage is slipping, or you have a spun prop. or you have a bad clutch dog in lower unit. try spun prop first.

take a permanent marker, draw a straight line, to match cotter pin. like the picture. take the boat for a spin, make it do what it is doing. if the lines are still line up, it is not the prop, if misaligned, the hub in the prop has slipped, and need to have a new hub installed by a prop shop, or a new prop.

hey thanks for the quick reply/ so i hooked up the muffs and drew a line and ran it for acouple mins and it still goes fine up til about half throttle then still revs real high. so i stopped it and checked the lines and they are still parallel with the cotter pin. so whats my next option?

It has to be in the water for the prop to slip, not on muffs.

took it for a cruise and only still went to 1/4 throttle this time, then turned it off went for a swim and it wouldnt quite start back up so ended up gettin tower in haha thinkin carb is gunked up and plugged?
