Inop trim

When I tried to startup my 1988 100 hp Mercury outboard this year the electric trim would move the engine up but not down. After a few trys it ended up in the full up position. When I activate the down switch I hear a click but it does not move....Anybody have an idea where to start in trouble shooting the problem?

The parts list for that motor shows two different PTT systems. The three ram system has two solenoids, while the single ram system has two relays. Troubleshooting is a bit different for each. which one do you have?

If you have the two relays just swap them. If then you have down but no up you'll be needing a new relay

I have up but not down and am not sure whether it is a two relay system ir not. How do I tell?
