just bought a boat and this motor was on it took the boat out to day and would be going along at full throttle and the motor would start to kick when i backed off the throttle it would stop the kicking would start at around 35 mph and would stop at about 17 mph and wouldnt come back until i got up to that speed again any help and advice would be great thanks

also the motor would start just fine but if it died under way and i try to start it again it wouldnt start then we would wait for about 4 or 5 minutes turn the key and it would start back up any ideas on this on its kind of puzzling me because if you tried to turn the key before the 4 or 5 minutes nothing would happen not even the sound of the motor trying to turn over any help on either of these would be great thanks

If I were to guess at the problems, the first guess would be that one of your cylinders is cutting out at high speed, due to one of the carbs being clogged up.
It could also be electrical; it's hard to tell.

For the starter problem, most problems are caused by dirty connections, so start by cleaning every connection between the battery and starter (including the negative cable side) to eliminate the cables as a cause.

better describe kicking. like you are hitting a submerged log, or like the motor is turn off, the right back on,

Its not so much as a kicking but the motor bounces when I hit that certain speed and goes away when I throotle down or the kick is kind of like when a car has a govoner on it and you try to go faster but it just won't let you so the car starts to kick a little I think that best describes the kicking

Let me put it another way as to what tashasdaddy was getting at, it the "kick" a "thud"?

What we are trying to figure out is if you have more than just one problem.....one fuel/carb/sync related and a separate problem with the lower unit.

Just a question or two....after or before buying the boat, did you check the lower unit gear lube? Can you tell us the condition of the old lube if you did? Look at the gasket between the carb bowl and body. Is it black or maybe a reddish brown color? Fuel hoses in good order? Have any idea of the maintenance background of the engine.

I know....lot of questions but the answers may help.
