I have a 85 wellcraft with a 5.7 motor the guy before me replaced the distributer with a HEI it has worked for me for two years just never been completely right when you hammer on it hard. Well today I finally got to take it to the lake and try the boat after been working on it for 6 months doing all new carpet and floors and upholstery and installing all new gaskets on the motor. But it will start and run fine on muffs in the driveway. I got to the lake and unloaded it and waited for my driver to get in the boat after parking the truck and trailer. We headed out of the no wake zone and went to start to get in it and it just was backfiring through the carb I could not get it to come up over 1200 rpm and it would backfire. I am not sure where to go from here. I guess I am going to stop and get 8 new plugs on my way home tomorrow and pull check and make sure the distributer is not off one tooth. I tried to move wires a little to check for one tooth and it didn't matter same thing. Any help would be great. That I can try tomorrow so I can head back to the lake tomorrow night.

one tooth off makes a bi difference. also, 180 degrees off makes a huge difference. setting a dist. 180 off is a common boo-boo made.

You can't get it to run 180 out, and if one tooth off, all you have to do is turn the distributor farther to get it in time.

Check your firing order on the cap and spark plugs. All it takes is 2 plug wires crossed and you are done.

Yea I tried to turn it alot and still no good. I know it is not 180 out it would not even run. Also I pulled all the wires and started over 3 times still nothing. I may even buy a curve kit to throw in it and try that.

Ayuh,... It sounds like a Fuel Delivery Issue to Me,....

I'd concentrate on the Fuel System,.... Tank Vent to Carb....
It could be as simple as a Fuel filter Full of Water...

Re: mercruiser timing / distributer problem

I was thinking fuel problem also I was just pulling the distributer and rechecking it all since I messed with it so much today. I just put a new fuel seperator filter on last night and a new fuel pump and gauge which it is running at 9 psi which seems high for a mechanical pump. Thought about installing a regulator but I really don't like to run them. I am running a edelbrock 1410 carb.

The plugs don't look bad not rich or white. The carb only has about 20 hours on it. I really can't afford to buy another 400.00 dollar carb to try something else.
