I have a 2004 Stingray with a Volvo 3.0 Today on Lake LBJ I went to start the boat after swimming and discovered a broken bolt at the bottom of boat back by the drain plug. After getting a tow back to by a very nice gentleman. My brother and law and I discovered the bolt was 1 of 2 that holds the starter in place. After tapping on starter got it to turn over some. Question 1 if I replace bolt broken bolt should this move starter back in place enough to re engage teeth and every thing works fine again? or do I need to replace whole starter. We are going to have to remove starter any how to tap broken part of bolt and get it out of block. Questions 2 and 3 any links to find the right replacment bolts? and starter part #. Thanks for any and all help.

Re: Volvo 3.0 Starter Broken Bolt

I live in Austin and the boat is about an hour away so I am driving out tommorrow to pull starter and see exactly where the bolt broke off. After looking at previous posts on this subject Im feeling pretty discouraged but hoping for the best. I don't have the equipment to pull the motor. Sounds like alot of work for a 4 dollar bolt. I'll keep posted on how it goes.

Re: Volvo 3.0 Starter Broken Bolt

Very happy to announce that the bolt is free. Did not have to pull engine. Got a hold of a Snap on tool from boat shop for a couple of hours that allowed me to start a pilot hole. Then with alot of lubricant and extractor kit and probably alot of luck the bolt came out. It was broke off at the threads about 1/3 of an inch inside the block. After securing the Snap on tool job took less than 15 minutes. I picked up 2 new bolts tonight and will be putting starter back in tommorow. Will update once again.

Do you have the bracket that goes from the starter to the block? On my old one, I found out the hard way (broken bolt) that I didn't.

So, obviously, if you don't have it, you should get it to prevent it from happening again.

Hey, Power addict I do have the support bracket but I did notice that the bolt that goes into the block from support unit had vibrated it self loose.

Update, put starter back in this evening, pulled all plugs just too double make sure that engine was not vapor locked and hit the key. Nothing so I had my brother in law tap starter with wrench and got it to turn over a few times no water in cylinders always a good thing. Put all plugs back in and pulled the starter back off. Brought it to real mechanic for rebuild should have back by friday. I will update then hopefully be on the water by weekend.

????? Going to pick starter up tommorow in your opinions is the starter bolt being broken and the starter being shot related or pure coincidence.

Re: Volvo 3.0 Starter Broken Bolt

The bolt being broken was caused by the bolt missing from the support bracket. Use real starter bolts, not Ace Hardware bolts. Corrosion is the usual suspect for starter failure.

....from my auto experience Ace Hdwe/Lowes/Tractor Supply bolts are just fine as long as the proper grade is used. Whatever you bought make sure it's Grade 8, the originals let you down once already btw....

Ok, got it all bolted and wired back in this evening and was back on the water. I will be keeping close eye on the bolts for the next several trips.
