going to install a new trigger on my 1985 85hp force. I looked on the fly no timming marks that I can see. also not sure were the trigger arm should sit for Idle . I put #1 piston @ TDC. is there a mark or a approx position that the trigger arm should sit at at start up thanks

Re: Timming marks/ new trigger linkage install

just went out and checked my woodruff its has not sheared. I have 4 marks on the flywheel 3 slashes together and another single slash I noticed a slash on the top of the carb housing Im guessing this is my marker to Line up TDC. when I have the single slash lined with the one on the block the top piston is at TDC. Im still not sure how to set the trigger postion when at TDC . I fired it up yesterday and it idles and popped sounded like a fire cracker. would fire it back up and would do the same maybe a cylinder not firing right? was thinking about pulling off a plug wire and firing it 1 at a time to find the hole thats giving me problems . does this sound right? also Im guessing firing order would be impossible to get wrong? I have mine 1 2 3 as the coils come down

Re: Timming marks/ new trigger linkage install

You can do a static timing check with a timing light to verify #1 cylinder. The trigger will only go on one way to connect to the tower shaft linkage correctly.

You are correct about the 3 slashes/timing marks. From left to right, first one is 32 degrees advanced, followed by 30 and 28.

Double check the wiring on the terminal block. Service manual has the wiring diagram.

Top coil is for #1 cylinder, second coil from top is for #2 cylinder etc.

just checked the comp again there all at 135psi, thats the way I have the wires on the plugs top to bottom from coils. only thing I can think is a carb issue or more ignition issues

Do you have some past history? Is this a motor that you recently acquired, or is it one that you had and was running fine a some point in the past?

Re: Timming marks/ new trigger linkage install

went through wiring again the guy who wired it has the red wire instead of orange pluged into the coil. would there be a change in panel wiring to correct this I tried to get spark from orange and there is none but there is on red when I swapped the white/green strip. something is wrong on this coil wiring I have spark to the 2 upper cylinders again that are wired together off the one cd the one Im having issues with is the one wired single off the cd
