I'm about replace manifolds and risers on a 1995 mercruiser 5.0L in a kinda tight place, I know I won't have any troubles getting the bolts out, as these were new last year with a block change, but this is my 1st attempt, so I was looking for some helpful clue's ... reading this forum gave me alot of info and tips... but 1 thing comes to mind when taking off the elbows, should I heat up the engine for a bit 1st or will the elbows come off the belows easy enough, or does it make a difference?
Another question, if the elbow gaskets come pre-sticky, is sealer needed in adition? my guess is no, but some expert advise is appreciated.
I also found alot of different answers when it comes to torqing... some say 22ft/lbs for the manifolds.. some 30, or 33..
any ifno is greatly appreciated.

Using the correct Mercruiser maintenance manual will answer your questions without relying on some one's memory.

Here is a link to Mercruiser's Service Bulletin 99-10, Exhaust Manifolds, Risers and Exhaust Elbows. http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/99/99_10.pdf

Read cafefully, make sure you are using the right manifold to riser(elbow) gaskets. The torque spec is there for the risers. The manifold to head torque spec is 25 ft*lb. No sealant needed on either gasket surface. Use only Merc gaskets. Be sure all gasket surfaces are clean and level. Spec for risers is in the service bulletin.

Ayuh,... Clean gasket Surfaces are what's Truely Important....
Be sure all gasket surfaces are clean and level.

Ayuh,... Level as in FLAT.... Straight-edge Flat....
