I recently purchased this motor, thinking this was the answer to all my previous outboard motor experiences. The motor was test run for me in a barrel before purchasing, and seemed to start, shift, and run fine. This has an electric start option, which is new to me, but works great. The motor pops off on the first half of a crank and idles smoothly. I warm it up a little, but notice it will only idle down with the choke pulled part way out, even after running for a while. I also notice that the motor feels a lot warmer to me than some others Ive owned. It is definately pumping water, so Im wondering if this is normal. Now to the accelleration. Sometimes the motor will perform like it should, or like I think it should, and pop my 14ft aluminum boat up like nothing. This normally lasts for short bursts, and then it almost seems like the motor will rev higher, but will not push the boat. It is kind of like something is slipping, not bogging down. The engine revs so high, I almost think it is going to break something! Sometimes at full throttle, it seems to not accellerate at all, and will go into its revving fits, but not go any where. Does ths seem like strikely a carb issue, fuel supply issue, prop(which looks ike has seen better days), or something major? Im going to run a few tests on it, but any foresight or knowledge about these things would be great. Thanks!

Re: 1980 25hp Evinrude concerns

welcome to iboats!!

your idle issue is most likely a fouled carb............. there are instructions in the "frequently asked questions" topic.

your over revving sounds to me like your prop hub is spun................ in my area a 25hp is around $36 to repair the hub. or if the prop is in that bad of shape you could buy a new one. you can get them here on this site under "parts"

you also should go ahead and replace the water pump and thermosats along with the lower unit oil.....and the plugs ........ etc. thats what i do when my buds buy another......or even myself...... i go ahead and do precautionary maintenance.
