Hello everybody,

I'm new to this site, but hoping someone here could help with with a question. I have a 2001 25hp Merc 2-stroke, manual start. I was out fishing the other day, and after several successful start ups (one leaving the boat ramp, and a few more moving from place to place), the engine would not start. I went to move, started the motor- it cranked up fine with one pull- but when I shifted it into forward gear (tiller shift) it stalled. I must have pulled the cord 300 times after that but not even a sputter. I pulled each plug out separately and held it in my hand while pulling on the starter, but neither plug seemed to have any life (new plugs earlier this year). Any ideas? Is there an electrical component that is bad, or possibly it's in the shift linkage that won't let it start because the motor thinks it's in gear? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

with a new engine like that I would start with the obvious...Is your gas tank vent open all the way? and if there is a manual fuel line shut off, is it open?

don't know what day you posted, but here is my two cents. I have a '95 25 hp, just above the handle on the motor is an on/off switch, did you hit that? No spark is a def electrical issue. I do not know about the electronics on these as I am familiar with Ye'ol point systems. This holding the "plugs in your hand" thing, did you ground the plug to the block?? if not, you won't get spark. engines are all very basic, no spark - elect, spark no fire - fuel. these are general rules. But please do post when you have it corrected. that may help someone else down the road. good luck

It's definitely not a fuel problem, I have checked all the filters, cut-offs, etc. Engine is getting fuel just fine. I will have to try the spark plugs again while grounding them and see if that works. Kill switch is in "run" position- checked that several times. Thanks for the feedback.
