I just got this boat, first boat ever. I have no idea what type of motor it has, or the horsepower or specs. I already have read many helpful things on this forum. THANKS!

But I do want to know what I have.

As far as I know

its a 1990 Bayliner Capri Cuddy Cabin, I have now realized (since taking it out on Sunday) that it needs some TLC to the motor, it is pretty slow. I don't even think I broke 20mph. It has a L-Drive 4Cyl...

HELP ME, or save me from a financial disaster! haha

a 1990 4 cylinder l drive would be 120 hp.

before doing anything else, check the compression and check for spark on al 4 plugs.

I just bought pretty much the same boat. 1987 Bayliner Capri with a Force engine. Beware, you may have to mix oil in the gas. Maybe I'm more clueless than you, but I had no idea that I had to do this. Therefore my engine just broke after using it 3 times without oil.

Re: what do I own? Help me.

The previous owner sold it to me with a full tank. I assume he knew?? But I didn't and when on my way to the lake I topped it off with like 2$ in gas. which is less than a gallon here in Cali. Anywho. I used it at the lake, for about 3hours maybe less.

I did pull the plugs yesterday, seemed fine i suppose.

One was really dirty, other three were little cleaner.

Ill check compression, maybe even drain tank and refill for my own.

How do I mix oil/fuel. what are the ratios?

If its an inboard motor, its a 4 stroke and you dont need oil in the gas. only 2 stroke outboards use oil in the gas. when you do the compression check you looking for at least 100 psi (120 to 130 is better) and no more than 10% differance in the cylinders. More then that or lower numbers indicate a problem. If the plugs were really bad as you say that could be an indecation that you need a good tune-up. cap, rotor, wires, oil and all filters.

I am not sure you can call an L drive and inboard. I am pretty sure it is a two stroke and it needs oil. Probably 50 to 1. Verify this before running that motor or you will trash it for sure. That boat probably wont run with any other kind of motor either so if the motor goes the boat is worthless.

Like eurolarva says, it IS a 2 stroke, it Needs oil mixes with the gas.

It is an L-drive, which is a Force 2 stroke powerhead mounted in an engine well.

Pour in 2.6 ounces of tcw-3 oil for every gallon of 87 octane gas.

When you added the $2 of gas you messed up the 50:1 ratio, dump the gas out the tank into another container and use it for you lawn mower. Put in fresh gas and add the proper amount of oil like Roscoe said. Sounds like you may have caught it in time.

WOW really? $2.00 messed it up? I didn't think it would be that sensitive. Hmm, well Now I will trash that fuel and get the mixture correct. So I an buy this oil anywhere?

OK nm, found out about the oil. I will try this and hopefully it works out for me. Otherwise, I don't want to bust that engine because then it will be junk!

Thanks guys!

To make it simple add 16oz oil to 6 gallons of gas. The directions are on the oil bottle.
