Why doesn't iboats work overseas?

About 8 months ago, I moved to Japan. I had no real internet connection for the first 3 months, only a slow one in the lobby of the hotel I was living in, so only used it to check email. Anyway, when I finally moved into our house and got online, I noticed that iboats did not work. It wouldn't connect. I would check it periodically, but always the same outcome. Just a page that said "couldn't find server", or something like that. Eventually, I just wrote it off, thinking that it was the latest victim of this economy. Well, fast forward to now and I am here in the states on vacation enjoying the hell out of my boat. Just for the heck of it, I tried again, and obviously it worked.
So, what is the reason I can't get iboats from overseas? The company I'm with is Softbank, and EVERY other website I've tried works fine?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Erik

I have no idea why the site wouldn't work in Asia...I know that it does work in Central America and England, as folks have been posting that live there.

I would imagine that some of the site moderators/techies may have some insight.

Good luck to you:)

Asia has been a problem for a few years, due to all the scams, spam, and hacking coming out of the area.
I believe it is still blocked.

Unfortunately Australia got caught up in the mess.

You can still get on if you use a proxy server to gain access.

You can google "using a proxy server" to learn how to connect.

If you want to check in when outside the US you need a vTunnel or some other proxy site so they don't know where you are posting from. I gave up trying to post when I am in Ghana ... just too hard and time consuming. But with vTunnel, you can get in and lurk/post if you want. Good luck, and if you want the link for vTunnel I can get it for you.

It is a PITA, and uboats is the only site that suffers from the problem.

I am using a proxy at the moment.....(up till a couple of days ago the proxy was really slow and an absolute waste of time), and it sort of works.....probably about as well as driving your car backward everywhere....can be done, but??

Cheers

Strange !!!! I hve no problem getting on during my business trips to Japan and South Korea. Using a laptop though, don't know if that made any difference or not. Only problem I did have was not being able to spend as much time here during those trips as I would have liked.

There are 2 ways to circumvent the iboats block. The first (and most common) is an anonymous proxy, they are free and plentiful although you may get advertising popups. I am currently using browser9, vtunnel stopped working for me a few weeks ago.

The second way is best explained by QC because I do not understand it, something to do with lan or something.

Thanks for all the info. I'm sure I'll be able to get the link for vTunnel when I get back. I really missed being able to stay "up to date" with iboats for the last 8 months, so thank you all for giving me the info to stay connected. It's bad enough being without the boat. Anyway, trying to get as much water time as possible while I'm in the states. Probably going to go back mid August; hope the money holds out for these 4x per week fill-ups.

Update...
Well, I'm back in Japan and obviously iboats is working for me via VTunnel. Thanks to all for the information. It's bad enough being without my boat 9-10 months out of the year, but to loose this community also; unacceptable.
Thanks again,
Erik

Welcome back to the forums:D Are ya going to be doing any fishing over there in Japan? I'd be interested in taking a charter out in the big water if I were you.

Re: Why doesn't iboats work overseas?

Well, something has definitely changed. As of about a week ago, I can now log onto iboats normally and it is fast. I am also now getting e-mail notifications which has not happened in 7 years!

A big hearty THANKYOU to whoever was responsible for fixing it.

Yeah, I agree. We're good, you guys? I look for you or Kerryn on Skype sometimes . . .

Re: Why doesn't iboats work overseas?

I'm good, Kerryn not so much (same problem). Her father passed away a few months ago, he was very ill for a couple of years and his death was not entirely unexpected. Kerryn has taken it very badly.

We are on skype occasionally and i sometimes see you but assume you are business talking, I don't like to interrupt.

Any more plans for downunder? I see on the news that a couple of new LNG facilities have been built on the westcoast.

Re: Why doesn't iboats work overseas?

Probably not me down there which is a bummer. I guess it's possible . . . we're close to a big deal, and it could include Australia. A US manufacturer, and they do sell down there, so I could be part of it somehow, but looks mostly US domestic for me for a while. I miss it all and would love to see you guys. I still toy with the idea of a family trip, so maybe, but I'd be kind of surprised for business.

Give Kerryn my best, and please "interrupt" on Skype anytime, we rarely use it as a phone, just instant messaging, so no big deal at all.

Re: Why doesn't iboats work overseas?

Seeing your signature pic I can understand why you are hesitant about an overseas trip, your own backyard looks magnificent!

I am trying to talk Kerryn into a European vacation, get her away from all this stuff for a short while. Maybe a layover in CA on the way home could be on the cards. Big maybe, I still need to convince her to leave our shores.
