New Egg did a sale and return w/o my consent.

I ordered a 2TB hard drive on 5/12, then on 5/14 and 5/15 charge and returned was processed to my VISA w/o my knowledge.

I'm filing a police report.

Bottom line:
a) use credit card not debit cards for online transactions
b) don't store your credit info EVER with any website
c) check your statements ever 3-4 days online for your own fraud check.
d) document all your conversations!

See below for mine with NewEgg, story will continue on this.

Looks like they made a mistake. They are human and you aren't out a dime. What's the big deal? I really don't see a reason to
file a police report over this. Maybe let newegg know it happened and that you'll be watching them closely. I wouldn't be concerned if I were you. Just watch your statement from now on.

I would agree. OP might be overreacting a bit.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

Guys;

I charged a 2TB hard drive, then someone else used my CHASE VISA info and charged other stuff from NewEgg, obviously inside job because they caught it next day and did a credit to me. I've had 0 issues since.

I was not contacted nor emailed by NewEgg this incident - which I feel they should have done, I found it by chance reviewing my statement.

Sharing here the importance of statement reviewing 3-4 days.
Using credit card not debit card for online transactions.
Might even be good idea to have separate credit card JUST for online transactions and another for all your physical transactions?

Sure, I was not out any money - this time.
Yea, what will going to Police do? I'm not out any money - goodpoint.
Maybe my way of getting visibility to this situation.

Some credit card companies issue a temporary card number just for on-line purposes. I have used "Shop-safe" on numerous occassions when I do a first order with a new company I am buying from. You can limit the dollar amount and it may be used from 2 to x times. I always limit it to 2 (the minimum)

Mike, I understand your concern. It would concern me to for the reasons you state. However, unless the police are any different where you come from than where I live, they will say, "No big deal, you didn't lose any money. Don't waste our time."

That said, I hope you did follow up with Visa and then with NewEgg again. I am guessing that some miscreant might think, "Hey, he did not notice when I took money out and deposited it back in, let's do it again, and this time keep the cash." Alerting NewEgg will let them do an internal investigation and get rid of the perp, if there was one and it was more than just an accounting error.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

They charged you $282.96 on 5/12. On 5/14 you were charged $527.50 for some reason that you do not currently know. Whatever the reason, they credited you $527.50 the next day, without you having to do a thing. In fact, you apparently didn't even know about the transactions at that point in time.

Someone made a mistake, realized it and made an immediate correction. You don't know that there was an attempted theft involved. I don't blame you for checking into the matter, but I think you need to give Newegg the benefit of the doubt, at this point.

To err is human, to really screw up it takes a computer.

As a copier electronics technician I've been using newegg for over 4 years without a problem and we order a large number of hard drives, memory etc.
Their shipping is awesome and the freight is very reasonable. My posting this thread is just to offer a different view to those that haven't bought anything from these good folks.

As a matter of fact this poor old laptop with the sorry keypad is going to get a new HD real soon and I will buy a Western Digital from Newegg.

As stated before calm down and remember live each day of your life to it's fullest cause it ain't no rehearsal.

Some CC accounts can also be setup to email you anytime there is account activity, beats having to login and check everyday and for mine I always get the activity emails within a few minutes of a transaction.

I would keep a close eye on this situation.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

I agree it's better to be safe than sorry but that's why I have 1 credit card with a fairly low credit limit for internet and out of town purchases. Heck, if someone does steal it they wouldn't get far before they topped the credit limit and yeah it would hurt if I had to pay back the companies that were rooked while all was made right but it sure wouldn't send me to the poor house. Come to think of it, I may be there already. Ah the joy of owning a big hole in the water to throw your money into.

Safe boating & charging ya'll

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

Honestly;

If NewEgg had been upfront with me and told the truth, I easily would have let this pass and not escalated it.
Look here, this is their words then "We did not charge you"
(via recorded online chat session)
NewEggIssueChargeCall3.JPG

Now, when I called them yesterday their rep when I pushed her gave me the customer # of the person who did place the charge for me to file a Police fraud report, which she was ok with me doing - actually suggested me to do, then I could follow-up with NewEgg fraud dept. The person name on that is different than mine, but she would not tell me. I made sure the whole conversation was recorded.

When I'm lied to then it's a matter of principal and ethics.

Keep in mind this: I never spoke with anyone when placing my 2TB hard drive order, it was all online. Definitely their inside job.

Simple Q:
If someone uses your personal info to place a charge is that a crime?
Yes or No? I say Yes.
Should they be punished/reported? I say yes.
How else can I do that w/o a Police report?
Regard less if I was refunded.
For 2 days I was wrongly billed!
It's like you stole from a dept store, got caught 2 days later and the stuff was returned, the dept store has their goods back. Would they not file a Police report?

What the diff?
Where is the consumer protection here?

NewEgg "fixing" does not make what happened "right", nor does denying it.
For sure they don't want bad PR on their bread-butter online ordering system, like Bike Nashbar recently did for their 2-3 month credit card internal issue that just recently the public found out about.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

I get these charges all the time, I make an online purchase and a charge shows up on my account statement, then a day or 2 later I see another charge and a credit for the same price. Simply put this is a initial charge to verify funds, then a credit to release the initial charge and then finally the charge that is processed when the merchandise ships.

As previously stated you may be over reacting.

The difference is that through no direct action on your part, the "theft" or "mistake" (more likely) was corrected. So maybe the online rep chose her words poorly, but that doesn't mean you were lied to, you effectively have not been charged. Is it a little scary? Yes. Is it theft? Not in my book.

I am not sure why you are looking for protection from a crime that was not committed . . .

If I had seen this charge before it was credited, and I called them, and they then fixed it, I would probably still not be all that concerned. I understand about your principles, but for me your principles require that you only pay cash for everything in person. Might be fine, but that's not what you did . . . ;)

Also . . . if NewEgg thought they had a dishonest employee after discovering this, don't you think they have waaaaaaaay more to be concerned about than you? The point being that their reputation is worth a whole lot more than $500 and my instincts tell me that they would prosecute and/or fire if they suspected that there was anything fishy going on. My .02

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

After this post, I'm out. This is a non-issue.

Dude, you "principal and ethics" are getting in the way of your common sense. Also, the cops are not going to do a thing for you - there was no crime.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

Well you were dealing with a customer service rep who has limited access to company financials. This happened almost 60 days ago. Good luck with your venture and I really do not know what is legal and what is not...... I do not claim to be a lawyer.

I think it was a human error....... if we shot humans who made errors in this world .....it would be a lonely place!

After watching the thread I would suggest we close it before it becomes a battle of non-lawyers. Jay Merrill made a wise statement "This is a non-issue." ;)

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

I'm going to take the side that you aren't over-reacting and have every reason to pursue this incident. In this day and age of identity theft you can't be too careful about suspicious activity. The fact that the second charge is no where near what you paid for the hard drive means right away that it was NOT a temporary charge to determine if funds were available for the transaction. If the dollar amount was the same, then it could boil down to an accounting issue or a temporary hold on funds for the transaction. Fact is, the charges are totally different amounts.

The next point is that a customer ID # was given to you that pointed to a person with a totally different name then you using your credit card number for a purchase. Was this issue fixed? Yup, sure was, but who is this other person and why was another person able to use your card? I guess maybe when they ordered they could have transposed a couple numbers of their card and it just so happened to match yours and when they realized the mistake they let NewEgg know. Problem with that theory is that it's VERY hard to just randomly chose a credit card number that works.

I don't think I'd go to the police quite yet, I'd contact the NewEgg fraud department and get some answers from them to see what the situation is. If they tell you to file a police report, go for it. Any attempt at fraud over state lines is a federal offence and the law doesn't take those lightly.

Re: Watch NewEgg / credit card

Went through something similar with Sears. Bought a new house, spent $20+ Large on completely equipping the place new, on a PROMISE of no fees/charges for twelve months.

Guess what? Lot's of fees/charges. Went to my statement, on line, and freaked! Called them up, all settled. Be PLEASEANT and walk through the issues, It's no big deal.

I just got a free $20K loan, via Sears. I'm happy to work a bit to keep it. Plus, money's, in the bank. to pay it, WHEN I have to.

Work it.
