It's cowardly to hit a little kid, yours or not.

Can we please not go there? What started as an innocent thread is about to get ugly. You have just insulted a good number of the parents on here all by yourself. Good job.

Ok.... so "time out" would have served them right. Yeah, right.
Not where i come from. I used to get the mouthwashing with soap for smart talking much less a belt or a flyswatter across the back of the knees. Now if i had given the finger to anyone and my parents knew about it.... i shudder to think... It's called discipline. More kids need it.

Amen. I am not in favor of beating or abusing children at all. I love my daughters more than life itself. But, I will not hesitate to swat them across the behind if they are acting up and I have exhausted talking to them. My favorite is that most of the parenting advise about not spanking I hear from people comes from two camps: People that don't have kids or the ones that have kids that are absolute wild childs.

I will have to say that I have three young boys. I teach them to respect their elders but I also teach them to use their own mind. Sad thing is my 8 yr old is smarter and more respectfull than a lot of adults he comes in contact with. It is also hard to teach young kids the difference between respecting another adult and obeying. There are way to many freak, kid touching physchos in my county to tell my kids to listen to every adult. They need to be able to think for themselves. Us older guys have to remember that just becasue we are older doesnt mean we are wiser, and respect is always earned not given.

I am thinking I would have confronted them too. Kids need to understand that is not how to behave. BUT with the way things are today I am VERY surprised that when you were talking to them it was yes sir and no sir. Usually it is quite the opposite. Just glad it turned out good. Could have been you getting into trouble for trying to do the right thing.

Those two children will grow up to be adult members of our society one day. Allowing their actions to go unanswered would have been a disservice to the rest of us as well as to them. To those who think "Oh well, they're not my problem", I disagree. Those kids could end up somebody's problem if not yours. Kids headed down the wrong path need someone to help them adjust their course. If left unchecked, who knows where they'll wind up. Do the children and the rest of us a favor and quit bitchin' about how the world today sucks and do something about it. To the OP, thanks.

I've come across some parents that are just as bad if not worse than the kids. Had one kid at a ball game give us some crap and the Dad was just like him, smart@$$ and cocky.

I'm thankful to have been raised by a man that was respectful of others, a helluva a nice guy, and taught my sister and me to be the same. I've tried to instill that in my now grown sons and daughter.

I bet when that kid tells his dad this story, he'll be shown where and how to use the flare gun.

I think you did everything right. I don't think you should have 'filed a report'. If he has not been contrite and apologized, you would have been right to follow him home and talk to his parents. Odds are, they would care, but they could have been the same way.
If he's a big drunk redneck hothead, then let it go; discretion is the better part of valor; the confrontation would have only gotten worse. Same with approaching the parents.

Also, did anyone notice that the ones who were beat regularly don't spell very well?

Re: So a 12 year old driving a boat gave me the finger!!!

This is a conversation about how society has taken a path different from the one most of us traveled. When I was a kid, I was spanked and punished almost daily. I deserved it. I swore that when I was a parent I would not allow anyone to discipline my child. Now, I see things differently. I want my child punished the moment he starts to misbehave. Now, I'm not in favor of beating a child, no means no how. But somewhere between "little johnny you know that's wrong and sit quietly for 15 minutes" and "go get a branch off the tree, drop your drawers and bend over" there has to be a solution that teaches children not only right from wrong, but wrong comes with consequences. We talk about it all the time here on the forum, responsibility, responsibility and responsibility.

Sorry for the rant,

In this case, you did the wrong thing. Sorry. Confronting the kid did not get your message across. Going back to his parents would have. Explaining the situation to them may have had more of an impact (if the parents took action). Otherwise, they got away with it without punishment. They were afraid you'd follow them to their parents. Not doing so allowed them to present their version which was not in your favor. There was probably a very angry parent out looking for you.

Re: So a 12 year old driving a boat gave me the finger!!!

I had an incident at the mall of america. Waiting to go on the rollercoaster with my daughter. There was a group of girls in front of us. Apparently, there were more to their group. They waved them on. These three girls proceeds to cut in front of about 40 people in lines.

I kindly tapped them on the back and asked what they are doing. They acted as if it was okay...as if they got permission from their creator. We need to get up here to ride with our friends. I told her that if they want to ride together, then their friends should move to the back of the line with them and that it was unfair to the people in line. They acted as if nothing happened.

I asked for the ride attendant and explained that the girls had cut in line. Signs were posted that you would be ejected from the park if you cut in line. Shocking, they didn't do anything but warn the girls. I had to speak loud to my daughter and explained that there are unfortunate children in the world that had bad parents that didn't raise them properly! Those girls would not turn around at all.

I have to disagree with one point you make, Home Cookin'. My parents gave me many spankings, whoopin's, beatings, whatever you wanna call them and I never spell any words incorrectly. Not to start an argument, but what would that have to do with anything anyways? I am used to having to re-write my homework 20 times if my writing was sloppy, which since I'm left handed it was always sloppy. Every beating I got was well warranted, I may not have thought so at the time, but I do now. Many kids nowadays need to get their hides tanned once in a while. Like a previous poster said, only when you exhaust all other options.

blah, blah blah - macho macho macho - not so macho when hurting someone who is not able to defend themselves. Pick up a book on good parenting. Do your research. Hitting a child makes for an angry adult. No one should be so violated. Only in self defense. A parent "teaching a kid something" by hitting is not self defense. It's pure stupidity. Kid pays for parent's stupidity for rest of kid's life. Damn crying shame.

I would have if it wasn't going to be a 20 min ride in and out. Please, let them come look for me....... I'll expect an apology on how ****ty their kids acted and how they were upset that they were breaking the law (no pfd's anywhere on the boat)
