I have just purchased a 1978 Grady White with a Mercury 175 Black Max outboard, the engine seems to be fine, but when I shift to forward I feel a grinding or Knocking in the shifter, this is noticable even more when the boat is running in the water, I just changed the oil in the lower unit and found some shavings.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing the knok, or grind?

Are you by any chance trying to gently ease it into gear? Boats aren't like cars. You want a quick solid shift or you'll grind the gears and that might be what you're hearing. You won't do your motor ANY favors by slowly and gently putting it in and out of gear.

Re: Black Max Mercury 175

I have tried to throttle it down pretty hard, and it makes the same grinding noise! When I took the boat out yesterday, she ran great! only after zI jammed it into gear, I am hoping the lower end is OK, I think maybe the clutch dog is worn?

PS. Know anyone with spare parts for a 175 Mercury Black Max, I think I also need the trim tilt motor replaced!
She stopped working yesterday!
I slowed down to help someone that ran out of gas and I stalled, when I tried to re start my mercury, the trim tilt motor was dead, Thank God I have a 6hp Evenrude Kicker attached to the transom, I used her to get to the beach and trailer the boat.

The mercury had a loose fuel line, I got her running, but the trim tilt is dead!

Having lots of fun with my new boat

Well that would have been my 2nd guess but I thought we'd try the free solution first.

For your trim motor you may be able to get it rebuilt if you have a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators in your area. Much cheaper than new.
