question about powering my '89 capri 1500

I haven't been into boating since my old 76 merc 50 blew up 15 years ago.

So I just bought an '89 capri 1500 with a force 50.

So far, this thing is gutless. (compared to my old merc) Right now, there is a sticker from the US coast guard saying that it is rated for a 50 hp.

However, I'm on a lake in canada.

Is there anyway to find out what the legal limit is in canada? A licensed mechanic I know said it's just a recommendation and I could probably throw an 85 on there.

the second half of this question is, if I DID stay with a 50 hp, how does the power differ between a fourstroke and a two? Is one better for pulling skiers than the other?

Thanks.

Does anyone know where I can find out about the LEGAL hp limit for my boat?

Not being all that familiar with Canadian boating laws I'd say that your placard would be what they went by. So that being said your 50 hp is going to be your limit of safety - and possibly their rules as well. My $.02

I live in Canada and own an 89 1500. Mine has a 70 Evinrude on it.
