I don't know if its the economy or what but 2009 seems to be the year of the garage sale. Everyone around me seems to be having one and they're always PACKED with people all day coming to see what kind of junk they can walk away with.

My neighbor across the street opened up his 4 day garage sale today.

My road is narrow.. So narrow that when I've got the trailer behind me I take up the whole lane.

The garage sale neighbor has 3 driveways that go back about 200 feet to his house. But since he doesn't want anyone parking on his "immaculate" grass, he's blocked off all of his drives so people have to park on the 1 lane street.

I could barely get my OWN truck into my OWN driveway after work today.

The girlfriend walked over and was talking to them. She mentioned that we were planning on taking the boat out Saturday and asked if, at the very least, they could put up a sign or cones across the street from our driveway so that people wouldn't park there and we could get out..

His sister (yep, not even someone that lives there) looks at her and says "well that's just too bad. You'd better get out on the lake before 9 AM when the sale starts".

Ohmygod.

I was sooooooooooo livid. I planned on being out on the lake early, but I don't want to be tied to someone else's schedule.

why not park all of your vehicles, boats, and everything in front of his house so his customers cant. discourage a few away, and definitely block off your drive way, and are permits required for garage sales.

Re: Neighbors and Garage Sales

Talked to a cop friend of mine earlier and told me state law in Ohio says you cannot EVER block access to anyone's drive.. There must always be enough space for an ambulance or emergency vehicle to get to you. He suggested I park my boat in the middle of the road Friday night. lol

I do have to live next to these people so I really don't want to cause problems. It is their right to have a garage sale, but it's my right to access my property - in or out. People really just suck sometimes.

Also I think a permit is only needed for a yard sale.. I don't know what the hell the difference is tho..

Sounds like some crappy neighbors...

If mine did that i would have the truck,3 cars, the boat and the RV parked all along my property at the edge of the street.
If the yard sale people parked even an inch in my grass they would get towed..;)

I used to live right next door to a church. It used to pzz me off to high hell because every tuesday and sunday somebody was always either blocking my driveway or on my grass.
I went in one day, walked up and litterally stopped the pastor mid sermon and demanded him to read the 3 plate numbers/car descriptions i wrote down to get the cars moved. You wouldn't believe the dirty looks I got.... as if i deserved them.
I've also had a few towed, and evened hooked up the chains to my F250 and pulled one down the street and left it in the middle of the road, it went on for the 4 years I lived in that house. I called the police so many times they stopped comming out. I feel your frustration.

Eh, just go out to the street at 2am with a can of white spray paint and write COOTIES on the road with an arrow pointing towards their house... No one will be stopping :D

I used to complain about them to. I found out you need a permit to have one, in my hood.

So, I went to the neighbors having one and gave them my "stuff" that I have no idea how to get rid of. Guess what? It all sold, I gave them 25% and I got 75% for stuff I had no idea, or time to figure out, how to dispose of.

Silver lining.

i too sympathize with you rr. i live close to a major university. many staff park on the side streets to avoid the university's fee for parking in unl parking lots. guess where they park. in ft. of my house. all day long and every day but sat. and sundays. they have no regard for anyone else. they'll leave their cars hanging in my driveway, to close to my driveway. too far from the curb. you name it. even in my driveway once or twice over the years... creatons.
i've found nothing to do about it. i do call the parking police every time someone is within 5' of my driveway pad (that's the rule for how close they you can park next to someones pad in lincoln). they get a $10 ticket. if their in my drive i can have them towed, and have had them towed too. but it's an on going battle. about the time i think they (unl parkers) got it figured out i don't want them in my driveway. new folks start parking here and it starts all over again.
if i ever move. i think parking around my house will likely be one reason for the move.... good luck man...

Our town sponsers a spring and a fall yard sale event for the entire city. Everybody who wants to participate signs up at city hall and they print a map of all the sales throughout the town. It is a pretty nice event that draws people from miles away. Parking regulations are usually ignored during the sale.

He admits you both have to share the road. So park the vehicles you might use the next day on the street the night before. That isn't being a crappy neighbor, just making sure you have access to your vehicles while he is having his yard sale.

I feel ya dog! I've got a single car driveway and ***hole neighbors who also always seem to be having a garage sale on the Saturdays I want to take the boat out.

Re: Neighbors and Garage Sales

new construction across the street from me. they built a teeny tiny driveway...big house, no yard. they think my side of the busy street = j@ck@ss parking. they should have thought about that when they built the small driveway/big house.

can i get one of those t-shirts?...get off my lawn!...not that i care about the grass. it's more like hay now, brown and crisp. been 105 here so long i can't remember.

o yeah..my point...park your stuff out there. like already said, they can't lock you at home.

around here you can only have so many yard sales/yr and they can only last 2 days.

Re: Neighbors and Garage Sales

The amount of garage/yard sales around here on the weekends is UNBELIEVABLE this year and the attendance of those sales is really crazy.

But, ain't karma a beeeeotch?

Wouldn't you know day 2 of their garage sale was today and I think I saw about 10 cars stop all day! Hehehehehehe. Attendance was so slow they closed early.

Now if I can just escape the predicted thunderstorms tomorrow I may be able to get out there and boat.

Set some sprinklers to where they spray out in the street where you want access. Most folks won't park if they know they will get wet getting in and out and loading their loot.

Now this is one smart idea. I'm going to remember this one..

Rumer has it I have a few sales coming up in my area in a week or two.

I have plenty of garden hose...

Re: Neighbors and Garage Sales

Must be an area by area thing, cause with the TONS of rain and genrally cool weather we had in Illinois through June, the number and volume of garage sales was WAY WAY WAY down here. I have noticed several garage sales in the past two weeks, when normally the sales are done by the middle of June.

But I would either park my vehicles in the street or try the sprinkler thing. But most likely park the vehicles in the street.

If someone is blocking the drive when you want to leave, how hard is it too find them at the neighbors yard and ask them to let you out ? Sure it's a bit of an inconvenience for a couple of days, but it's nothing to be concerned about. When my neighbor had one a couple of weeks ago I got some great deals the night before it started.

Re: Neighbors and Garage Sales

My neighbors across the street must have come into some money a while back because there has been a lot construction going on at their house. For some reason they seem to think it's OK to park half way on the street and half on my grass. I don't care if they park in front of my house, just stay off my grass.

They were asked nicely, a couple of times, to inform their sons and their contractors not to park on the grass. Lot of good asking nicely did. They made the mistake of parking there again when my wife had a day off. She, not so nicely, informed them that they had 5 minutes to get off the grass or the sheriff would be called. Lucky for them, they took her advice.

If it happens again when I'm home, someone is going to find my truck parked about 4" from their rear bumper and my tractor parked about 4" in front of them. When they want to leave, they will have to call the sheriff. Maybe they can explain to him why they need to park on my grass and put ruts in the lawn.
