where the fuel line plugs in to my 1986 johnson 40, there is another nipple that feeds into a black unit mounted next to the carburetors, that unit feeds into the carburetors. I'm told that unit is an oil injector. is that true and should i have an oil reservoir feeding that nipple.
this motor is new to me and i have ordered a manual but have not received it yet.

Re: oil injector ?

How about a photo. Does your motor have VRO on it anywhere ??
My best guess is it's the oil side of the VRO pump. Do you have an oil tank anywhere on board ??

Re: oil injector ?

hopefully, the oil side of the VRO pump has been disconnected, if not i would do so.

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

if the oil side of the vro pump has not been disconnected, would that cause the motor to not run? and what does the primer solenoid? mine does have a red tab.

Re: oil injector ?

with no oil tank, you best hope the vro has been converted, and you are using premixed fuel 50:1.

Primer Solenoid
the primer replaced the old choke butterflies in the carborators, pushing in the key activates it, like the old choke plates, but injects fuel directly into the intake.
The red handle is used when your battery is dead, and you have to rope start. You move the handle 180 degrees.
Normal operating position is with the handle back over the body of the solenoid, like in the picture below.
