newbie needs help OMC 190 outdrive

Hey guys

I just purchased a 1977 19' Reinell boat which is in very good condition for $450. The problem is there is upper or lower outdrive, I just have the part where the outdrive bolts to the boat.
I need help finding out what outdrive I have and what replacement outdrives I can put in. The engine is a OMC 190 and the outdrive model number is 981061 and the serial is W130732.

Can anyone help?

Its very possible it was an electric shift stringer drive.I think 1977 was the last year they made those.
Ebay may be your only hope of finding one...Expect it to be very expensive too...

im going ta look at a boat today with a mercruiser if it pans out ive got a lower electric shift thats in nice shape just needs the upper gear case i do see those on craigs list quite a bit if this boat with the merccruiser pans out i will have a bunch of good omc 175 parts ta sell we will see im going ta be posting up to these guys some of the info later so i can pick there brains on what ta look for in this boat im about ta look at wish me luck

Would a outdrive from a 4 cylinder engine fit or would it not be able to handle the V8 in my boat?

No! It would also be the wrong gear ratio. As stated above, the '77 would have been the electric shift outdrive. You would also need to know if the boat had a high or low profile drive.

If it used the low profile drive you could use either of the later drives, either the hydro mechanical or the full mechanical. You would just need to be sure to get the correct shift converter and a new throttle control. The electric shift throttle control had no provisions for shift cables.

You have the low profile electric shift outdrive. That is good IMHO. It gives you two additional options that I mentioned above. Your intact intermediate housing will handle all of them.

None will be cheap but it is doable and if done right you will have a nice setup regardless of what the black anchor crowd tries to tell you.

btw, you forgot to choose the 'reduce to' 640 x 480 option in the 'upload box' in Photobucket. You really ought to go delete your pictures the re-download them with that option checked. You only have to do it once and all future pictures will be that size. Your large pictures exceed the size of the screen and force you to scroll to see them all and read the stretched out text on the page.

Ok thanks. I can get a complete 190 outdrive that fits for $500. Does tht sound like a good deal? Also how would I find out if I have a low profile outdrive or not?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I will resize the pictures when photobucket comes back online.

$500.00 would be a great deal but.....You cannot just buy something like that, slap it on and run it. It would need to be looked at by someone who new them. You could install a decent drive, that needed attention, and very quickly be right back to square one.

Is there anything I could check myself when I go to look at it? If I do get it is there anything I should do as preventative maintenance? I am good mechanicaly I just needs to know what to check.

There is nothing externally, other than the obvious, that you could check. (except for the ball gear) Things of concern are the seals, the condition of the gears and several splined shafts and the impeller. If any of these things are bad and you run it, you might as well toss the 500 and maybe more, out the window.
