Wet phones... dont get me started. As an early adopter of electronics of all types I've probably ruined 4 or 5 $200 + phones. Funny thing buying insurance never covers that...

My wife has the original iphone. She accidently dropped it in the water once and washed it one time also. She let it dry for two days on both instances and it still works fine.

From what I understand the Iphone 3G I have uses cell towers to calculate for the GPS on the phone. So, will you be able to use the charts when out on larger lakes or the coast when out of cell tower range? Just curious, if this works I will definitely getting this app.
Even $80,000 land surveying gps units use cell phone towers to receive signal. There is other surveying units that dont use the cell towers but they have to set up a base station (more $$). No cell tower= no gps signal.

Re: For $5 you can download Navionics charts to your IPhone

I have a 3G I Phone and I just downloaded a GPS app called Motion X for 4.00. I was worried about it working where there is no cell service. We went last weekend to a local lake where we do NOT get a signal / service. BUT the GPS app worked. Only thing I noticed is when I went to look at my "track" while on the lake, I could see the red track lines (laps around the lake) but not the lake itself. But, it tracked my speed and distance, etc. Then when we got back home, I looked at the "track" again and same red circles but also with the lake showing. So, what I guess I am saying is the GPS signal does not totally rely on the cell signal. Again, we couldn't make or receive calls but the app worked. I assume the reason the lake itself didn't show (only the track) AT the lake was because the map couldn't and / or was too slow to load.

GPS Is just that Global Positioning Satellite - As in satellite - not cell phone tower. Cell phone towers are used to get positions faster. The cell phone tower tells the GPS about where you are and the GPS takes over. This way it doesn't take ten minutes to dial in your exact location to within 30 feet.

Once more - GPS DOES NOT USE CELLPHONE TOWERS. Cell towers are used to augment the GPS data to give a faster fix and a more reliable fix. (and download maps if there not stored in your phone.) GPS will not tell you EXACTLY where you are to the inch, more like within 5-10 meters. Augmented GPS is much more accurate because it uses local fixed locations & GPS to triangulate your position making it more accurate than standard GPS.

I see folks talking about Navionics for $5.99. What are we talking about? I see it for $9.99. Is there a special deal somewhere else?

I will be downloading the navionics when i get home. pretty cool for 5 bucks!

I have the 3G iphone, i don't cell recption at work, and it could not find my location when i tried it in "maps". it simply said "your location could not be found" I made sure that location services was turned, and it was.

I guess i got the one iphone that does work on cell towers and not GPS. damned the luck!

iPhone app "Maps" is a 3G application. It downloads maps from cell towers as you move. The Navionocs charts are stored in the phone. Not the same animals.

You know you also have to be outside with a clear view of the sky for the GPS to operate right? Inside out of cell phone range wont work period.

A-GPS is better than GPS and your iPhone 3G has it. I would try the charts where you are in cell range so it has some clue where you are on the planet. Then use it from there.

A-GPS is real GPS! It uses satellites just like any other GPS system, the difference is that it can also incorporate data from cell towers to make the initial lock faster and more accurate.

Or go outside :)
