I read the post in Engine FAQ's posted by JB and I think this falls under the #1 situation but I need to be sure. I took my newly acquired boat and newly acquired 1963 Johnson 10hp to a local lake and aside from just a few wide open throttle runs to play with the lean/rich adjustments, we pretty much just idled around the lake for about 30-45 minutes. Brought the thing home, went out for pizza and came home to this. The source of the leak is a small hole where the red arrow is pointing. Please tell me this is normal as described in the Engine FAQ's and how can I improve on it? Thanks.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

if it is gas/oil that didn't burn i have seen it before. if it is gear lube that is a bad sign. it looks like unburned fuel/oil mix with engine carbon deposite that has drained into your exhaust and leaked out that water relief port on your cavitation plate. i would clean it up and run it again and see if it goes away if it isn't gear lube from your lower unit. since it is a newly aquired boat i would change my water pump and gear lube in the lower unit anyway.

Check the gearcase, and see if it is low on oil. It look's to thick to be unburned gas, and oil, but what ever it is, where is it all coming from. If gear oil, you may be able to tell by the smell, check the upper drive shaft seal under the water pump. If it's engine oil, could be a damaged, or worn lower crankshaft seal. A rich carb setting, or running the engine on one cylinder from ignition loss can leave unburned fuel, but that look's like to much. Try to determine what lube that is, and we can better go from there.

What does it smell like ??
Smells like gas it's from the exhaust.
Smells like rotten eggs it's lower unit oil.
Either way some attention is required. That's a lot of it.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

Good morning to all. I was up bright and early to see what you folks had to say about my situation. I did change the lower end gear oil already but checked it anyways. Nice and clean, no problems. Drained it anyways and re-filled it. The plugs are new and I checked those as well. A little wet, no carbon build-up, overall looked pretty good. The smell of this stuff is definately 2-stroke and gas.
It's very light in density, sort of like cool whip in consistancy. Like I said earlier, the majority of time running yesterday was on idle or just off of idle. Very little WOT and there seemed to be a fair amount of exhaust smoke as well. I do remember that the few times I did throttle up it was slow to get there, like there was a little lag. If this problem was with a snow machine or an RC nitro car I would definately say it was running was too rich (other hobbies), but this is an outboard and I have zero experience with them. In another thread I asked about the high/low lean/rich knobs on the motor. Do I need to set these maybe? They are both set in the middle. Anyways, going to take it out again today, do some fishing. Thanks to all and have a great day. The sun is out - haven't seen it in weeks here in NH.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

The carb for this engine has two needle valves', low speed at the top of the carb, high speed at the bottom. When on the lake, and in gear, turn the high speed needle slowly clockwise until the engine starts to slow down, Then back counter-clockwise until it run's the smoothest, and fastest. Bring the engine down to idle. With the upper, or slow speed needle turn in clockwise until the engine slow's down, or start's to make a coughing sound, or spit's back thru the carb. Turn back counter-clockwise until engine run's the smoothest. If this makes the engine run better, run it around the lake full speed, and blow that unburned fuel out of there.

It looks a lot like what came out of my 2004 "fish camp" motor the first time I decarbed it after I got it. Your crud looks a little darker though.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

THe only time I ever saw anything like that was when I lived in Fla, we had a Snowbird neighbor who would "summerize" his motor (they went to Canada for the summer and had another boat up there) with what seemed to be a quart of 2 cycle oil. That stuff would flow out like an oil well when he started it back up.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

Just got back from the lake. As we headed out this a.m. I played with the high speed knob. Things seemed to be running well but as soon as I took my hand away it would spin all around in both directions. I couldn't keep it set and the vibrations didn't help either. While the wife was fishing I took the cowel off of the motor to take a look. What I found was the high speed shaft almost completely unscrewed from the carb body. Maybe half a turn ccw and it would have fallen out. I screwed it back in hand tight but really had no idea what the needle was at. It fired up and we headed in. It ran like a dog but we made it back. The owners manual I just rcvd had fairly simple steps to set both the high and low shafts/needles back to factory. The paper seals were shot and I had some o-rings on hand that fit just nice. Did that and ran it in a barrel. The idle now sound and feels much smoother and when I shifted into fwd and opened her up I couldn't believe the difference. I think all the water completely spun out of the barrel. I have since shut things down to see if my original problem is still here. Sorry for the long post and Thanks to all who have contributed to my dilema.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

Just got back, !!Again!!, but with much, much better results. After setting the high/low rich/lean shafts and needles back to factory, and then setting things just a tad on the lean side I must say WOW, what a difference especially on the top end. It was like going from walking to flying a jet. This thing is so fast now and it idles nicely. Now that I've experiened a 10hp outboard that is properly tuned I must say that the size of the motor can be deceiving. I never would have guessed that this thing could have moved us so fast. I say fast because before making the repairs all I could manage was trolling speed at best. It has been sitting for about a half hour and I haven't checked on my oil seepage problem but I think this might have been simply a too rich situation. I did what R. Johnson said and ran around the lake quite a bit at WOT. Will post what I hope to be my last post on this problem soon. Thanks for the patience.

Update: Just checked on the motor. Completely dry, no oil coming from that hole at all. Pulled the plugs, dry and a little tan/brown. Things look good but think I will richen things up just a wee bit. Thanks to all for the great advice. I look forward to future posts and the new world of boating and these phenominal 2-stroke outboards!

Go to the yellow pages in your phone book, Look under outboard motors. You really sholdnt try this at home.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

So, getting back to your original post, that seems like an excessive amount of unburned gas/oil mix. With your high speed needle almost out you were running a very rich mix and now that you've corrected the needle you should notice much less oil dripping. Glad you got positive results. That is what this forum is all about. Rick.

Re: Someone tell me this is normal!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I thought you were leaning away from our advice. When you get a chance, replace those fiber washers around the needle valve's. Then tighten the retaining nut to hold the needle friction tight. Great to here you have the engine running. Those small engines can be a surprize.
