I have a 85 50 hp evinrude. i recently did a overhaul on the jug new pistons rings etc. Put all together ran great now recently i just will not idle. there is a abnormal amount of fuel in the water when i have it running. i did the compression and carb rebuild. used compressed air and carb cleaner floats are where they should be gaskets ARE GOOD IN CARB. My question is could the floats be out of adjustment?

You say it ran good after the rebuild. Therefore the float levels are not the culpert as they don't go out of adjustment by themselves. Since you have raw fuel in the water, check for:

-low compression
-flooding carb from needle and seat stuck open from debree
-no ignition on one cylinder
-fuel pump diaphram leaking into crankcase via pulse port

checked the fuel pump did not look bad. 120 and 125 on compression. fuel does spit out of the carbuerator by the brass fitting. as long as the motor is at a higher level it is fine. as soon as i let it down it pucks. If it was running fine why would the bowls go bad and need adjusting?

Sorry, a typo on my part. I meant to say the float levels don't go bad on there own (unless the floats themselves get "heavy" but not in your case)

-flooding carb from needle and seat stuck open from debree
-no ignition on one cylinder
-fuel pump diaphram leaking into crankcase via pulse port

Does the little bit of gas that spits out of the low speed jet mean anything.

Just a silly thought, but is it possible that you have the manual lever on the primer solenoid in the wrong position? This would flood it out.....

i would listen to tashasdaddy and check his solutions first................. those carbs need to be cleaned manually. ive seen them look brand new inside until you start pushing wires through orifices.

if you really want to check your timing you need a tach, timing light, and enough guts to hang off the back of your boat with the timing light............. or you could go back to the main forum page and go to frquently asked questions and look for joe reeves wot timing method

The carbs have been checked 5 times by many different people the last thing for me to check is the timing.

well the idle timing has no adjustment........ only at wot.

have you done a link and sync?

have you tried to turn the idle screw up a lil?

if you hook it to muffs will it stay runnin?......... what im asking is does it only die when in the water with back pressure?
