I ended up with a rotten transom. Log story short we believe the bad transom seal (ie water leak) caused a seal rupture of some kind in the outdrive.

Problem: Oil dripping from the weep hole, happened one day after I noticed the leak (a big leak at that) ..

Question .. would water cause this to happen? A blowing of the seal?

How hard will it be for an aircraft mechanic to follow a repair manual to either rebuild the entire outdrive if needed, or simply just change out all the seals?

What does this mean? You're pretty short on details to boot, ie, things such as years and models, etc. You'd think that aircraft mechanics would be a bit more specific.

Re: OMC Outdrive

The drive is a remanufactured drive, the model number on the OMC stern outdrive is 985685 attached to a 4.3L GM block that has 6269732 in the manifold at the top ... original year 1988, date of remanufactured outdrive unknown. The rest of my boat is in excellent shape, so I hate to sell it for scrap or at a loss.

To further explain what I mean, I had a small leak in the bilge, I had thought if was from the plug tube needing to be resealed but it turned out to be a rotten transom. I had run the boat one day and I noticed the leak, it was a small leak so I wasn't too concered, but 5 hours later I was taking on water almost faster than I get bilge it out. Once I noticed the bilge was running allot I high tailed it back to the dock. The next day I noticed oil was coming from the weep hole on the bottom of the lower unit. The next week I trailered it to the dock and checked to see what was leaking so bad, it was the transom seal due to a rotten transom.

I was trying to keep it short, sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm not the aircraft mechanic my brother is ... was just asking about complexity that could be involved with fixing the outdrive which I was asking if a leaking transom seal could contribute to the oil coming from the bottom weep hole of the lower unit. If that water can get in the boat around the transom, I didn't know if it could also get past the gimble bearing and force its way into the outdrive thus blowing a seal and causing the oil to drip from the hole in the lower unit.

Re: OMC Outdrive

Sounds a lot like a bad ujoint bellows. Water in the ujoints, gimbal bearing, and into the drive. Then mixes with the gear lube and pushes it out of the drive and into the bellows which then leaks into the bilge.
The front seal in the drive is probably eat up because of rust on the yoke.
This oily mess in the bellows will also run down the drive on the outside.
