while running the engine in the drive way at idle tuning it up the timing belt breaks. From what I under stand these engines are free wheeling and so there should not be any damage to the head or push rods or anything. But I wanted to check with the experts first before replacing the belt and goiong

Those are non-interference fit engines. You should be OK, just check the sprockets for corrosion and pitting as it will eat up a timing belt in no time.

Have a great day

As Rob mentioned, they are non-interference so the pistons can not hit the valves.
I did give you the link to the OEM service manual for your engine didn't I ???

Re: Timing belt aq131

I have the manual and I am using it to time the thing but like I said the mark is missing that is above the valve cover? Any tricks to get it going?

Also, since my harmonic balancer is attached ... Can I use that TDC mark on there intead of taking it off to check the line?

The new belt has marks on it that must corrispond to the dots on the timing wheels. Make sure the crank shaft marks i dead on, then do the distributor wheel. Then go to the cam, put the belt on the wheel with the dot on the wheel and the white mark on the belt lined up. The wheel should be in the position where the timing pointer would be if you had one.

Thanks don the belt was replaced and all well... Really appreciate it. One thing though before I put the cooling system on the belt is trying to walk forward a little is this normal?

No, it's not normal. Replace the tensioner.
If the bearing in the tensioner is going out, or is rough, it will tilt the tensioner and push the belt that direction.

Just go to the autoparts store and buy the automobile version. That is what I did. I would think it is cheaper than buying from VP.

Have a great day
