Volvo starter issue

when I went to start the boat 1983 Volvo Penta AQ 125A yesterday there was a clunk and an awful grinding noise coming from the starter.

I removed the starter and found the cowl over the pinon shattered and stuck in the flywheel.

This is a brand new starter.

when I put power to the starter ( ie bypass the solenoid) it spins well but does not pop out to engage flywheel.

if I power the solenoid the pinon pops out slowly and spins slowly

any body have any ideas on why this would happen and can it be fixed

Re: Volvo starter issue

The boat came with no starter, and the new one has no markings so it is probably from China.
I will contact the company i got it from to try to get a refund, and look for a better quality starter.
Just wanted to ask if it could have been anything I did.
On a good note I got about five minutes of great running time finaly before I went back to the dock to pick up the wife, and the starter craped out, would have been the first day on the water:(

Re: Volvo starter issue

I called the place I got the starter. the guy was very pleasent on the phone, and said to send the starter back and he would refund money, however he garantees there is something wrong with the motor, and this will happen again.
anyone have an opinion, if it is something that needs to be fixed, I would rather not get stranded on the lake overnite again??
