ok so i had some bad batteries, so oday i went and bought 2 new batteries, once they were in i went to try and start the boat and when i hit the switch, it was a loud grinding noise. and then i hit it again and the motor spun over 3 or 4 times and then it stopped hit it again and it spun over a few imes and you could hear what sounded like a sopt in it the starter would hit a sopt and spin then catch. to me it sounds like i have a bad spot in the flywheel, but i hope not. please let me know if there are any ways of being able to tell while motor is in the boat. thank you.

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

there is a good chance you lost a tooth or 2 on your fly wheel ..crank your starter over it until where it stop's then pull your stater off look at your starter teeth ..then look in the hole at your fly wheel and see if any teeth are chiped or missing use a mirror and flash light will help see in the hole ...when you crank over a moter with low voltage in battery the starter kicks back and will chip teeth ....in an emergency grab a hold of your harmonic balancer and turn your moter just a little bit past your bad teeth

Ayuh,.... You haven't gotten That far yet....

If it does come to that,... You'll need a Ring Gear,... Not a complete Flywheel....

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

Had the same problem with my 1993 Chap 5.0LX Alpha1. Replaced the starter 2 times before I got it right. There are 2 solenoids on Mercs with 1 being on top of the engine (for mine anyway). Once I replaced the starter and slave solenoid as well as replaced the starter bolts, no problems. Sometimes the Slave solenoid doesn?t fully engage causing a poor/weak connection. This can cause starter motor under volt over heat failure.

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

ok so we pulled the starter off today, and looked at the fly wheel, and the tops of the teeth on the flywheel and on the starter are both gone. the shaft on the starter is worn out and i think it is flexing away from the wheel and is not close enough to engage. what do you think i should do??? i will try to post some pictures alittle later.

I have been reading this forum for a month and I find it interesting and helpful. I came across this posting and I have a similar problem. IS it OK to post it here on this thread or do I start a new thread?
Just trying to get it right.

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

when you pull it out, the driveshaft comes out with the drive? is there anything the motor needs to come out of like in a car where it comes out of the transmisson?

If you would like some help with your problem i dont mind you using this thread, any imput or similar problems could help. most people dont like imposing on there thread though just so you know.

Re: Flywheel....... i think?????

ok so i dont know, but are there any differences in between a fly wheel for a car or truck and one for a boat??? i called my local dealer and he wanted $586 for a new flywheel. i have got to be missing something because i have never heard of a wheel costing that much. also while the motor is out i need to replace the oil pan, he wanted $266, now is that interchangable with car parts??? i know the starter has to be marine, anything else?????
