i picked this up in a trade so i sold my other boat and started tearing into this. it came to me with the floor partialy removed and after tearing it up i found that every piece of wood in it was rotting or starting to rot. so at this point i have it gutted except for the transon wood which will come out as soon as i get the motor of hich will happen once the rain stops. i 've got the new stringers, cross stringers and floor all cut and will probably give them all a coat of epoxy this evening
pics are here http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z114/fishmonster13/boat/

well both boats needed work but the starcraft looked halfway decent so it sold and now i'm left with the bayliner ,i actually looked around for another starcraft with no motor but couldn't come up with one in the area, plus the bayliner is big enough to take the family out on, the starcraft had a very narrow beam and more than two was a crowd

Hello, I am in the same boat as you (no pun intended). I have a 1988 Bayliner Cobra 1800 that I am having to replace every piece of wood in it. I just got the transom put in this past weekend. I also traded an 15' aluminum with a Johnson 50hp for this boat. Like you I wanted a boat that I can take the family out on.

What is the wood type you used here for the stingers and beams it does not
look like plywood. Also when you were doing this was the boat still on a trailer or up on blocks/jacks?

Re: 88 bayliner 16ft capri rebuild

the boat is on the trailer but i jacked it up and have put jack stands under it to keep it from moving ,stringers are fir and currently covered in epoxy.the transom and cross stringers are pt plywood made from 3/4 ,transom is 3/4 and piece of 1/2 glued together and the transom braces are 2 pieces of 1/2 glued together. transomwood will epoxeid to the fiberglass transom and will use peanut butter epoxy to close any gaps on the bottom same with the stringers. I'm taking Thursday off of work so i will have 4 days to put it back together this weekend should be able to get the majority of it done. i have some new photos up are my photobucket account

I was always told that pressure treated plywood & fiberglass resin won't adhere. Over time the chemicals leach out of the plywood and loosen the resin and it all falls apart eventually, did you use 'green treated' plywood or exterior grade?

That is a common misconception. The APA tests how that resin sticks to wet presssure treated nearly as well as dry ply, and resin sticks to dry pressure treated as well as dry ply. The chemicals used in treated ply can't leach out. One of the reasons pressure treated wood lasts so long, water or other chemiclas can't make the treating chemicals come out.

I've put poly resin and glass on pressure treated ply and it holds up as well as CDX. The difference being if there is a puncture or crack in the glass, water that gets in can't cause rot. Leaving you the opportunity to let it dry and patch at a later time.

My Capri didn't have a cross brace. They doubled up the thickness of the locker hatch to prevent flexing. I think the brace is stronger, but not as practical for storing long objects.

Re: 88 bayliner 16ft capri rebuild

Then why did I think PT plywood was such a no-no? Was it the warping it can go through until its fully dried? Not implying fishmonster13 has done anything wrong, I still have the bow to do on mine...so always willing to learn.
