I'm a car, guy, just started to work on a boat that my inlaws had sitting for almost 7 years now, and never used it once. The hull is in good shape, interior is going be be redone.

I have slim to NONE boat experience, so I'm looking for some help please! I've used forums for cars and found them to be very helpful!.

as the title states, it's a 78' Raven 270, 26 ft made by century boat company.

the engine is a V8, says Mercruiser on it, 233 hp ( right on the valve covers) and by looking at the stamped timing on the intake manifold, I have come to the conlusion that it's a ford V8, 351 CID (MCM223 is what the manual that i downloaded seems to call it) from a tag on the carb, i believe it's a Rochester card and by looking into it, it's got 2 barrels.

so before doing anything else to the boat, i wanted to see if it turned over. Got a battery, hooked it up, and turned the key, there's a click and that's it. used my multimeter and starter gets power. so i pulled the starter off, tried powering it directly, sparks fly and it don't turn, it's seized is my guess (that's what you'd expect after it sitting through 7 winters and never running.

so can anyone confirm the engine from the info that I provided? should I have the starter rebuilt? or get a new one?

the boat hasn't ran in 7 years, what would you recomment that I do to get it running without ruining the engine??

How the heck do you change oil in this thing??

The boat had some NAPA fuel/water separator filters (new in plastic - but rusted) so i know what kind to get for those, but oil filter and oil and how much.

what car from 1978 had this block in it so that I can go buy spark plugs and new wires for it.

I know it's not supposed to run without water, is there a hook up to run a garden hose, or do I have to drop it in a river/lake to run it? I can take pics, if you guys can point out what's what on it.

as far as gasoline is concerned, I should probably drain the fuel tanks and fill with fresh gas.

Does the outdrive (whatever it's called) thing out side the boat with propeller that loweres and raises cia hydraulics need to have oill in it, (where does it get filled/drained, how much and what kind of oil? is there a filter?

how about fuel filter? where is that? and how do I know what kind to get?

I know it's asking a lot, but i gotta start somewhere and it being so old, not exactly a ton of info on it everywhere.

Thanks in advance!!!

Go to this link and download manual #2. Hopefully it covers your engine/drive. Its a big file.

Marine starters are a bit different than automotive and much more expensive to buy, however rebuilding them is the same. So bring it into a shop and hopefully they can rebuild it for you.

Read up in the manual about removing the outdrive to inspect the gimbal bearing and ujoints, etc. You'll need to do that.

Hopefully the manual will answer most of your questions. Sounds like you've got it thought out, just need to tear into it.;)

A set of muffs an a hose for running out of the water, don't turn the engine over without water running, the impeller will melt in seconds. The impeller is a consumable, it gets replaced every year or two along with the universal joint bellows, lower shift cable should be replaced. The exhaust bellows should be replaced with the new style exhaust horn.
Most suck the oil out of the dipstick tube with a vacuum pump.
Your heads have either 14 mm or 18 mm spark plugs, that year came with either, check. Plugs will be listed in the maintenance manual. Personally I use Autolite or Motorcraft, extended tip. Cross reference to a MARINE plug, corrosion resistant. The same with plug wires, Autolite makes a MARINE set for the engine, order them. Any premium oil filter (skip Fram) for a 351 will work, oil grade is in the manual, follow the manual as far as oil grade goes, don't ad lib. Rebuild the starter, it's marine specific, as well as other components on the engine, do not use automobile parts. Get the Mercruiser maintenance manual, save it to a disc, print it out, read it. The more you know, the more you'll save. Next time you're at NAPA, ask for the MARINE catalog, decent parts.
