I pulled the upper unit on my Volvo 280 drive and the bolt that holds the gear from the drive(u-joints etc) was broken...... I believe I need to replace the bearings in that part of the upper unit because it whirrs when in neutral. i didn't have the whirring soound with it off. All u joints look good and function well.....any thoughts?????

With what off.

You will need to replace the ujoint yoke, have yet to see one with a broken bolt that it was possible to remove the broken bolt.
The head of the bolt usualy damages the shift cone where the shift slide runs.
As you suspect the bearings may also be bad, as without that bolt, they do not have any preload and are probably chattering. What you are calling a whirr.

kind of a grind.(well not really it is like a low humming sound ) I guess. I got the bolt out. I looked at the cones or the gears and they seem fine there is a little scratch on the middle but not bad. very small just bareley can feel it. Where can a guy get that part I have been all over the parts on this page and does it come as a kit.....like bearing, rolling bearing, seal and o rings???

If you finally find a new set, you'll be in for a little sticker shock. Might be better to look for an inspected and resealed unit or at least one that appears to be in good shape. Reassembly requires a rolling torque check, shimming, and preloading the bearings - among other technical inspections and adjustments. I got half way through rebuilding mine and decided it was better to cut my losses and take the gearbox to a certified Volvo tech.

Just my two cents worth.
