New Mercruiser 3.0L engine swap into 1972 Starcraft

I have been researching repower options for my 1972 Starcraft for a while now. MY current plan is to buy a complete new 3.0L mercruiser bobtail engine for my boat and adapt it to the original stern drive setup utilizing a new sterndrive from SEI. I'd like to go this route as it would net me new risers, manifolds, carb, a new alternator versus generator etc... and also keep my steering and hydraulics unmodified. Plus as a added bonus I would beable to use the original stern drive as a emergency spare. Through my research I have found out that up through 1991, the 3.0L engine was produced with a two-piece rear main seal and a 12-3/4" flywheel. Then in 1992, the engine was produced with a single piece rear main seal. Finally in the 2000, GM upgraded to a 14" flywheel which is how the engines are currently being produced. I understand that the new style engines can be retrofit into these older boats using the 92-2000 flywheel. My questions are

1. If you purchase a complete new 3.0L bobtail engine setup with a 14" flywheel, can the starter from the new engine be used with the 12 3/4" 1 piece main seal flywheel? Or would you have to re-use/rebuild/buy new a original starter?

2. When you use the new 12 3/4" 1 piece main seal flywheel can you use original coupler? or can a new off the shelf coupler be used? Or is a special adpative coupler or machined coupler required?

If I'm forgetiing anything plese let me know. I understand I need a wire harness adapter and I'm sure there are a few other minor things like moving fuel lines and such. Am I missing any other major points. I talked to a few places that sell retro fit engine kits but they had no info on the starter issue.
Plus they were only selling long blocks. And Mercruiser just flat out told me that company policy is that they don't recommend putting new engines on old drive so they offered no additional info. Any thoughts, info or advice would be greatly appreciated.

From my investigations, I have a 84' Starcraft Islander 221V with a 2.5L. The only thing I would have to do to drop a 3.0L in is change the flywheel on the 3.0 to the 12 3/4". Remove Flywheel and starter from the old engine and swap it with the new one and you should be good to go....

Thats pretty much what I figured as well. I was just hoping that I would have to ditch the brand new starter off the bobtail engine. But I guess I could sell it, or maybe work out a trade for a new 12 3/4" starter rather than use the old one. But in light of recent research I may just buy a complete new setup and be satisfied with that fact that everything is new, off the shelf equipment and obviously current. So trying to hunt down parts will be a little less likely.

Ayuh,... Sorry I missed your post on page 1 both times it went by,...
I did the same thing sorta with my 74 Islander, only went to a 4.3l/ Alpha 1...

I see in your latest post, you're going All new,... That's Good...

I was going to tell you to ditch the model 1 transom assembley,+ move up to an Alpha 1,...
Then you can still use your old drive...And the Hyd.s are better...

Going to the current production Alpha 1, Gen.IIs,... That won't be possible.....

Make up your mind about how you want to Mix,+ Match,....
I have a pretty good handle on the answers to the questions posed above,..
But,...
If you're goin' a different direction,... I ain't peckin' out the Answers to Moot questions with 1 finger....

Explain further please,,, you talking about the trim pump or tilt rams?

Ayuh,... Along the way,...
The trim rams are up-graded from the round 1" ones to the larger 1, 1/4" pistons...
And,..
The Pump gets to the plastic reservoirs.... Much easier to check or fill...
And,...
No more reverse lock out...

Depending on the Vintages chosen of course....
