What is this on my engine its a v6 i/o and the oil and here is low but dont know what

What is this on my engine its a v6 i/o and the oil and here is low but dont know what it is. Can some one please help me figure out what this is it on the top right of the engine showing in the pic where the belt connects too. I know its a little low and want to figure out what it is to fill it up. The only thing it says on the cap is dont over fill. Please help im a new boat owner and dont want to mess up my new to me boat... Thanks

also that not my enigne just the only pic i could find that has that oil filler/ cap in the pic on the front top right of the pic where the belt connects

Does your boat have power steering by chance?

I dont know. I was having steering problems when I bout the boat about a 4 months ago and brought it to the shop and they said it was the cabel and 500 bucks later it was better but not great.

I do not have the manual so I cannot be sure. It reminds me of a power steering pump. What color is the fluid and what does it smell like?

if you are referring to the reservoir on the top right hand side of your engine it looks like the power steering unit
if you unscrew the top and pull it out there should be red fluid on it and if it is low remember do not fill it up all the way, there is a cold level and hot level.

It looks like power steering to me. To be sure pull it to a boat shop and ask them to have a look.

if you unscrew the top and pull it out there should be red fluid on it and if it is low remember do not fill it up all the way, there is a cold level and hot level.

Ok ill have to put a little fluid on my finger to see if it red but it does say cold at bottom hot at the top of the stick which is on the bottom of the cap. The fluid is at where it says add but it doesnt show where to fill it up too.

yup thats its. Soo it is the power steering pump? On the bottom of the cap theres a dip stick and it says cold at the bottom hot at the top. My oil where it says add but doesnt show where to fill it up too.

Red fluid? All the power steering fluid (automotive) I've ever bought is clear/colourless. Is there special "boat PS fluid" that is red?? Just wondering.

most of the time I just use ATF, power stearing fluid, you can buy it red,

My manual says to use automotive ATF in the power steering resivoir on my Mercruiser 4.3

The lower "Cold" mark on the dipstick shows where the fluid level should be up to when the unit has been sitting for a long period and is cold or "not hot". The one marked "Hot" shows where the fluid should be once it has been running for a while and everything is up to temp. Wait until it is cold and add fluid until it is up to the "Cold" mark.

Merc/Quicksilver Power trim and steering fluid or Dexron III ATF. Either one is fine and it's red.
