Past weekend as we (3 adults and 4 kids) were cruising across the lake at half speed all of a sudden the rpms shot up and the troque dropped (like it had went into neutral or somethng)...propeller continued to turn until I increased speed and then the shaft seemed to be turning faster than the prop..we were only able to obtain trolling motor speed and had to be pulled in. Is there a key on the shaft that may have sheared or??

Thanks for any help

Re: 2000 Johnson 50hp Torque Problems

hopefully you just "spun" the prop.
take a permanent marker, draw a straight line, to match cotter pin. like the picture. take the boat for a spin, make it do what it is doing. if the lines are still line up, it is not the prop, if misaligned, the hub in the prop has slipped, and need to have a new hub installed by a prop shop, or a new prop.
