Kinda excited.. I just put down a deposit on a new car using the CARS program. The only problem is I have to wait until the program goes active.

Here is what I got.. 2009 Mazda 6 - Just like these pics - same color..

I got the 4 cylinder for MPG with the 6-speed manual. It has a bunch of goodies like sunrooof, Bose stereo, Bluetooth, leather, rain sensing wipers, etc..

I will be going from a 97 expedition with 178,000 with rusty doors, a bad head gasket and heater core to this . And my wife was supportive.

And I got a smokin deal..

Your welcome, the federal government picked all of our pockets for your rebate. I know cynical me, but I just don't like people in my wallet. Good for you that you can take advantage of the program though. Nice vehicle.

I don't like that program either, as with much of the bailouts, seems to reward past 'poor' behavior.

I just bought a new car too, but wasn't going to qualify since the last choice (Toyota Corolla) was a green one already.

Re: Kinda Stoked - Cash for Clunkers

Poorly thought-out, planned and executed government program that will lead to a net outflow of resources as tens of thousands of running vehicles will be destroyed, equal number of people taking on debt they probably can't afford and the environmental impact will be a negative at the end of the day as well as the destroyed vehicles that could still be driven will become more waste.

{from the ill-conceived program's website}
"The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate."

"What happens to the vehicle I trade in?

The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train."

So even if the truck runs fine and has real value it will be destroyed...brilliant plan:mad: For anyone who doubts this to be true...the website proudly proclaims that in order to be eligible vehicles must "be in drivable condition"

Funny how as soon as the gov't takes over a major auto manufacturer they also start programs that require people to buy domestic cars to qualify. Sounds like they are trying to guarantee sales so down the road they can say "wow the gov't sure does a great job when they take over sectors of our economy" sorry for the strong opinion on this one, glad that some people get the rest of our tax dollars rebated back to them at least.

What a deal. They give you 4500 for a car worth 6500 on the open market. Plus you get to buy foreign. Thats real US government thinking for you.

Glad you got a car out of the program. Considering the amount we pay in for welfare of others, it is always nice to collect some of that tax money back once in a while, even though it is more of a coupon than a refund.

The entire "scrap perfectly working vehicles" part.. anyone who voted for that should be walking the plank

I absolutely hate the thought of a program that destroys old vehicles instead of at least allowing them to be parted out. I am a connoisseur of old junk. I'm always needing a part for my older vehicles.

Where are Mazda 6s made?

Good question while I have no idea where the engine is made (trans is Jap named, built who knows where) I do know the Mazda 6 is assembled in Flat Rock Michigan under the same roof that rolls out the Ford Mustang.

Oh and as far as cash for clunkers OH NO ! SAVE ! SAVE ! the high mile rusty door 97 Ford Expeditions and 1994 Chevy Lumina's.

Hey take it easy guys.. This was a lighthearted thread. The $1B will be spent regardless of whether I take advantage of it or not. Since I am most likely paying for this program, I have no qualms about taking advantage of it. If I don't, somebody else will. I might as well as wrote them a check myself.

I believe they are made in Michigan. Mazda is owned by Ford and I support them for refusing the Gov't buyout.

You obviously have no idea at all what your signature line is talking about.

My current vehicle cost me 200 bucks. (Runs well, a little rusty) The last one cost 500. The next one will have to be a bicycle.

Thanks to the social engineers that are wrecking perfectly good cars and giving new ones away.

^&)(& you very much

I waited to post, but this program has me seeing red

WE, the public, are paying to have these vehicles sent to the shredder. No "RECYCLING" of the most valuable parts from these vehicles, engine, transmission, etc. These parts must be destroyed! While I don't agree with the program, the least they could do is recycle ALL of the usable parts. Cut the frame in half and sell the rest of it.

Next, they are going to bulldoze houses so new "GREEN" ones can be built in their place....

I obviously do know what my sig line is about. It is nice of you to judge me anyway..

Don't be mad at me, be mad at your government who is making it possible. I am just making a prudent financial decision.

Hope to see you at the polls in 2012.

What don't they make in the Flat Rock, Michigan plant? Mazda 6s and Ford Mustangs are pretty different vehicles! Strange that they are made in the same plant! Stranger still that the plant was built to make the Mustang replacing Ford Probe, those several moons ago!

Sweet ride and good deal! I'm thinking of doing the same thing myself. I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 with 140,000 miles and it runs okay but has a few issues. Gets 16mpg on a good day.

I just wish I still had my old Battlewagon to use as a trade-in! LOL! :D

Re: Kinda Stoked - Cash for Clunkers

I've briefly looked at this program as well. Wife has a 13-year old minivan and wants a new one.

It appears there are two levels of rebate vouchers: $3,500 and $4,500 for new vehicles depending on what "category" they fall into. The new vehicle may be domestic or foreign made and must have a combined mpg as determined by its category; the trade-in may be domestic or foreign made, but get no more than 18 mpg. The new vehicle can be purchased or leased, but the MSRP of the new vehicle can not be more than $45,000.

In our case, we have a '96 minivan that gets a combined city/highway mpg of 15. We were looking to trade it in for a new Toyota Sienna, a Category 1 vehicle under this program. Its combined mpg is only 18, which is "at least 2, but less than 5 mpg than the traded-in vehicle," so it qualifies for a $3,500 voucher. This would be in lieu of, not in addition to, the regular trade-in value of our old minivan.

Regarding what happens to the traded-in vehicle, it appears this program may be a boon for parts suppliers. While the vehicles are to be destroyed, they can be salvaged beforehand for anything not engine or drive-train related, so they can get air bags, alloy wheels, body panels, lights, glass, trim parts, you name it.

More details of the program will be announced on or before this Friday, July 24th. It is set to end on November 1, 2009 or until funding runs out, whichever occurs first.

For us, the current trade-in value of our minivan is $2,200, so the net gain as a result of this program would be only $1,300. Moreover, the new vans we are looking at (Toyota Sienna and Honday Odyssey) are being redesigned soon. The new Toyota is due to start production this coming January; the new Honda soon after. By then the CARS program will be over, unless, of course, they decide to extend it. We've decided to wait to see what the new redesigned vans look like, so, no, we will not be taking advantage of the current program.

Your Ford Fuzion is a Mazda 6 based platform. The Ford Probe was also a Mazda platform, and the 3 is shared by Volvo and Ford among others. Car manufacturing is a world wide business.
