Gelcoat is worn down on the keel no damage just worn off from beaching boat.If you are going to put a keelguard on it could you just coat it with Gluvit and put the keelguard over it and will it stick to the gluvit. That is what I am going to do to mine if you guys think it will work. This is a new old boat to me Thanks for any replys........

Re: Gluvit on keel

The adhesive they use on those keel Guard rolls is realy strong. As long as you clean the area where the guard will go with some ISO Alcohol to get any dirt and dust off the keel before putting the guard on and let the Gluvet dry comletly, I think it will be fine.

How bad is the damage? If it is worn down alot to the point you have flat spots that show fiberglass I would suggest using some bondo to get the keel back to shape then put the keel guard on. That way there are no air pockets under the keel guard or spots that are miss-shaped that may have an impact on how water os displaced off the keel when under way. Just a thought.

Good luck to you.

Re: Gluvit on keel

Well yes..... LOL

Gluvit can be applied to the exterior of a hull and it is an epoxy. It will not really be any thicker than paint.... but much more money. You can get gelcoat repair kits cheaper. I believe the biggest factor will be "How Worn is it?"

The keelguard will stick to just about any repair except it needs to be an adequate repair. The repair must stick to the hull too.

Is there any exposed fiberglass fibers in the keel?

Re: Gluvit on keel

DO NOT USE Bondo below a water line and it is not good for a boat. If you need to go that route use marine tex. Moving this to restoration

Re: Gluvit on keel

If it is just Gel coat damage and the hull has not been damaged, what would be the problem with using Bondo To just bring the surface to a smooth even finish so that the keel gaurd has the proper surface to stick to? I cant see why Bondo would be bad for the boat, if its done right? I know of many shopes that use Bondo to fill Gel coat scratches and damage, as long as the Fiberglass has not be damaged.

Re: Gluvit on keel

Thanks guys for the fast reply it is just the gel coat worn off I figured the gluvit would be the strongest thing to use. Nothing needs to be built back up just was not sure what to coat it with and heard a lot of good things about gluvit Thanks again.....
