hello, i have a 1985 115hp evinrude and the 20 amp ignition fuse inside the engine continues to blow. I want to think it is being cause by a short somewhere but the engine will turn over for 5 to 10 seconds and before the fuse will blow. any advice you can give me would be great i am not sure what to test or what could be causing this problem. Thanks

the fuse controls the starting circuit. sounds like there is a short in the wiring harness, controller, or solenoid is drawing more than it should.

i have checked the wiring harness several times over and it seems solid. i do not know about the controller but it is all very clean and appears solid inside. how would i go about checking the solenoid for any issues ?

It would be very rare indeed for the solenoid to give such a problem, but I suppose all things are possible. What else do you have connected to it? I suggest removing all the purple wires from the ignition switch and replace them one at a time till you find which one blows it.

Re: 1985 115hp ignition fuse

Ok thank you for the advice. i disconected all of the purple wires. ( i should have mentioned the VRO pump was replaced with a conventional pump about 4 weeks ago because the gas side of the diaphram had a whole in it and i did not want to pay alot to fix the problem. so i went back to a conventional pump and it works fine. )
anyway i unhooked all the purple wires and the fuse did not blow i started hooking them back up one by one until all but the VRO pump connection. ( do i need that one hooked up i assume not without the pump in place. ) so i got them all attached without the fuse blowing and on attempting to start it the motor backfired so i stopped checked the fuse it was fine so i tried to start it again. The motor backfired again, this leads me to think that the timing has somehow been thrown off and this may be the reason that fuse was blowing. my question is... is that possible. could a timing issue cause problems with the ignition system ?

The motor never ran well at low rpms and it would always seem to loose a few cylinders when trolling. when you gunned it the motor would take a while for the rpms to climb then it would fire on all 4 cylinders. i assumed that was a carburator problem and not a timing problem but i am starting to wonder about that as well.

thanks again for all the advice i never would have got this far without it !

Re: 1985 115hp ignition fuse

it sounds as if the motor sheared the Flywheel Woodruff Key, requires pulling the flywheel. i have had them take a week to decide to release.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.
