You need to remove the gimbal bearing, the u-joints, and the drive shaft bellows and replace them all. Good luck.

ya don't say what kinda drive ya got?

on my mercruiser 1 drive. that looked much better than that. the end story was replacement of,

drive shaft bellows
shift cable and bellows
shift shaft seal (to new style)
shift shaft and shift shaft lever
water hose
gimble brg.
ujoints
ft yoke seal
drive gear brgs.

i think that was all i did. been a year since i did it. so may have forgot something.
it's labor intensive and parts and proper tools added up dollar wise pretty fast... i used mostly oem parts... and if you do it yourself. you must have a service manual. preferably the oem one for your rig will get you through the deed the best.. the aftermarket one will work good for knee pads... ;)

good luck

You should not attempt to go further w/o the manual ;)

its a mercruiser alpha 1 gen II off a 97 sea ray with a 4.3. I have ordered new u joints all new bellows, gimble bearing and water hoses, and of course seals. Hopefully this does the trick we will see if this bearing comes off when the tools come in!

if you don't have a 3 jaw slide hammer puller, you can probably borrow one from one of the chain auto parts stores if you call around...

i'd be pressure testing that drive too. and even if it don't fail the test, i'd still be very suspisious of the ft. seal and yoke. the way i get it, and what i believe to be true. is that the ft. seal will keep lub in your drive. it will not keep water out of the drive (a good reason to check your drive lub too), as there ain't supposed to be water there in the first place. the seal only seals one way. water rusts the yoke surface and that rust eats up the ft. seal. the ft. seal of the drive is likely going or gone because of the rust on the drive gear yoke. replacing that seal is not real easy to do. unless you have the proper tools. if you replace anything other than the seal and yoke. ya gotta reshim too if i'm not mistakein....

the drive oil has been drained and i dont see any indication of oil in it. i drained it into glass mason jars so i could check it out. I guess the pressure testing wouldnt be a bad idea. My dad used to be into restoring cars so i have the slide hammer, and ive ordered the alignment tool, and the bearing re install tool, and the trim sensor screw tool. Is there any other special tools i might need? Oh ill be using the manual as its posted here on the forum, i printed out the parts i will need. Hopefully all goes well!

I would, with all the other stuff replaced you mite as well
that would one less thing to worry about
you don't want to have to pull it all back apart again
