Here's a topic that could go either way. I feel that a lot of people look down on flat bottoms because...well there flat. A lot of people seem to think that flat bottoms are only for inner bays but from my experience with them I know what they are capable of so.......
Flat bottom vs V bottom what's the pros and cons? Just want to see what the publics knowledge is like when it comes to Flat Bottoms.

Re: Flat Bottom vs V Bottom

I love my flat bottom. Where I live, we do a lot of fishing in very shallow back bays. The only way to get there is in a flat bottom. It's also a lot of fun running 30 knots in 6-8 inches of water, hunting for the fish.

Also, on calmer days, we can take it offshore to fish the rigs, or troll for the deepwater fishies.

The deck space provides a great party area if you just wanna float with friends. No problem to ski/tube/board behind either.

I certainly understand the advantages of both hulls, but for my needs, the flatbottom is the only way to go.

I suppose the obvious response is pretty much what you might expect.
Depends where you want to go with the boat.

While it's true that just about anything gets the job done on a calm day, and to be honest, I don't boat on windy days; it's also true that even on calm days, other boats make waves.
Sometimes, they make big waves.

My brother-in-law used to own an island at a local lake. He used an 18 foot flat bottom boat for everything, including getting the groceries, tubing and fishing.

It worked great, unless the wind picked up. Then it was an obnoxious thing to ride in. Very loud, and very wet. It was also a scary beast when we had to cross the wake of a larger boat.

I have a 19 foot BR with a Volvo I/O. I'd never consider buying a flat bottom, since it would not fit my needs...but that's my needs, not yours.
Crossing wakes and getting back to dock when the wind picks up barely registers with my V-hull.

Regards.

Re: Flat Bottom vs V Bottom

On smaller boats, a flat bottom is more stable than a V. So for 14' and under go for flat for that reason alone.

Flats with square bows have more room than V's (a rectangle has more area than a triangle).

After you get above 16' the hull shape, rails and gunwales and other features such as spoon-bow, will affect the seaworthiness against big waves but generally flats go over the waves rather than through them. for that reason I find them more seaworthy but this is also why they are notoriously rough riding, even in small chop.
Once you are over 21' your V should handle anything that a flat/square would.
Flat boats also slide on turns more, so factor in manuverability and your particular needs--and safety, since a sliding boat can be dangerous in the wrong hands.
When comparing, remember that the deadrise is what matters. So when thinknig V versus flat it's really "deep V." I have a flat V, a deep V and flat squares, and the deep V is the different one.
