Re: how do you pull your motor?

My neighbor ran his back hoe right up behind my boat, I used a chainfall.

The guy down the street has a low enough boat, with tires removed from trailer, can get it with a regular old cherry picker.

My dad used to make a 'tee pee' out of 3 heavy timbers.

I set up a 'tee pee' (as KRH calls it) right on the boat deck to pull my Silvertons motor. I used a chain hoist to raise it. To get it off the boat (she was floating in a slip) I stripped off all the accessories, chained it to a moving dolly, and enlisted 4 able-bodied dockmates to physically lift it to the dock. It was pretty easy....

The new (fully dressed and tested) motor was installed by backing the boat to a bulkhead and booming it into place with an ancient (truck-mounted) crane.

Sturdy tree, sturdy strap around the tree, cable hoist between the chain on the two lifintg points on the motor and the strap on the tree. Helps to have another set of hands to help guide it out.

Rented a cherry picker. 42 bux a day. It was a 10 Footer that tilted over into a towable trailer. Lifted it right over the side. Try not to set engines on the oil pan...

Called a tow truck. Let them know what we were doing so they could send the right truck. Took about 20 minutes to set, index, and secure the motor.

I constructed an inexpensive hoist. Took 4, 10 ft 4x4s, 2, 10 ft 2x8s. Made an a frame with the 4x4s and screwed the 2x8s together to make a beam. Used 2x4s to brace it and 4 metal pieces to lock it all together. Purchased a chain hoist and used a piece of chain around the beam to hold the hoist. Worked like a champ. You can see it behind the boat in this picture.

Back my boat under a beam in the barn and hook the come-along between the beam and motor and start cranking it up.

When I just replaced the motor I backed my boat in, pulled the motor out, pulled the boat out and parked it, then backed my truck under the motor and set the motor in the back of my truck to bring it to the machine shop. Reverse order to put it back in, worked great, it maybe took 5 minutes to pull it.

Re: how do you pull your motor?

I built a "hangmans" scaffold with two 12' 4X4s supporting a double 2X10 cross piece. I had 8' 2X4s to keep the 4X4s plumb, and to tie their bottoms together. I used a chain and a cable hoist ($20 at the HW store) to lift the block. Once the block is up, pull the boat out, lower the block and do the repair or replace.

I've pulled them with a chain over the bucket of a backhoe, as well as with a boom truck. The operator is the difference between a huge PITA and a piece of cake.
