I have a chance to purchase a 25hp Merc. The guy says that the motor has been in a shed for a long (5-8years) time. Do not know if it still runs. Whhat should I do/check before trying to start? Cosmetically the motor looks brand new. He is letting me take the motor, try it out, and make an offer. I am trying to find out the year of the motor, serial # is 0D018407. In my research it looks to be a 1991, if iI am correct. Depending on the year, if it runs what would be a fair price for this motor. Thanks in advance. fficeffice" />>>

Re: 25hp Mercury Identification

Thanks for the reply. The compression checked out good, ~125 both cylinders. I had access to a bore scope and checked both cylinders and they had no rust or damage, fuel system looks good. I have added oil and rotated flywheel. So far everything looks good (lower unit oil, waterpump hoses ect.). I am still looking for varification on the year and value. If everything else checks out I may try to start this today. Thanks again

Looks like the motor is a 91. I the motor on muffs ran OK but it has a small leak on the carb (primer/injector). I still need to make an offer (price). Any ideas would be great.

Re: 25hp Mercury Identification/value

A few years ago, I purchased my 1985 25hp Merc. Bought it as is for $250. I was told that a older man bought it new and just used it on his 14' fishing boat.
Cleaned it up, cleaned the plugs and put muffs on, fired it up...ran perfectly. I have since put on a electric start system. Wise choice ($600) I also use it on my 14' Lund for fishing. It has NEVER failed me. I love that motor !!
