and make sure you don't have your temp switch and temp sender wiring backwards. A sender doesn't work the alarm, the switch does.

Thanks but it's not possible in my case. The sender has on wire that snugs over the threaded stud. The switch has a harness (plug) with two wires, and one from the sender as well.

doing some testing and report back.....

this may be a stupid questions but is it possible the thermostat has been removed and won't show a temp? I was going to check this but feared messing up the gasket....no biggie but want to run this a little later to change the oil.

if the engines cold you are not going to see very much movement, maybe a bump when the powers turned on.

Yes. It goes to the 100 mark with power. Idled yesterday for 15 min, no movement. Still troubleshooting.....

neither sender got me below 230?? hummmm.... Both bad or not to spec? Ground fine...this has to be the problem, right?!?!? Just bought the $30.00 sender yesterday. It is different shaped (smaller).

How sure are you that it's the right sender for your application?
Did you overtighten it? That will kill a sender in a hurry.

Did you check the sender ground to the block, Thermosats housing does not always ground to block, OEM gaskets have a copper rivet ro insure grounding of thermostat housing.

Sender ground to the block? Please forgive me but I don't quite understand how to do that.

Here are the steps I have taken so far.
- Verified gauge opertional by grounding at the battery, it pegged.
- Checked good ground connection from battery to block.
- Replaced Sender
-Tested both old and new sender with hot water. Ohms would not drop below 230 at 140 degrees. Manual says it should be between 127-152!!

Before I try a new sender, I need to do what you suggest and also what Don told me to do (test the connection with an ohm meter. You should show no resistance from the base of the sender to the block.) With the sender out, test resistance to the block with each lead on the meter?

And Clanton, it is VERY possible the gasket isn't OEM. Going to check that too.

THANKS!!!

I am not giving up.....

EDITED TO NOTE: I think I have it. Don and Clanton, your both telling me the same thing.... This all boils down to being properly grounded. Too dark now but I bet this gaslet is not OEM!

THANKS!

Re: New Temperature Sending Unit issues

I posted this earlier, it would have answered the question of the ground rivet in the gasket.
Besides, I can't see how that gasket will be any better at making a connection than the 2 bolts holding the Tstat housing to the intake manifold.

Just test the connection with an ohm meter. You should show no resistance from the base of the sender to the block.

Yes sir. You are right, I just didn't get it. Fingers crossed the gasket is the reason. Deductive Reasoning, gentlemen! You help is much appreciated!!

Re: New Temperature Sending Unit issues

Do the test with the ohm meter, don't just go buying gaskets for no reason!
Why does everyone always want to throw parts at a problem in hopes if will either fix or cover up ther real problem, instead of finding out what the problem really is and fixing that.

No sir. I am not buying anything until I test. Can you do me a favor and explain exactly how to test. I assume just to hold the sensor in my hand put one lead on the base of the sensor and the other on the engine block? And there should be no resistance, correct?

No resistance between both new and old Sender. Touched the base of sender and the block...no resistance. has to be a NEW BAD sender! Dang it!

Re: New Temperature Sending Unit issues

Has to be the tstat gasket. No doubt. I grounded wire from gauge to BOLTS on tstat housing, it pegged. Try to ground it on installed sender NOTHING. Also tried to ground on housing itself, nothing.

Removed gasket and GUESS WHAT? it's not OEM....no rivet!

Going to get a new gasket. Keep you posted.

Re: New Temperature Sending Unit issues

I guess this rivet in the thermostat housing gasket issue is why my engine has a ground cable attached to on of the bolts that holds the thermostat housing in place. I always thought it was strange that I had a ground wire at BOTH ends of the motor. At least it is grounded very good.

THANKS IBOATS.COM!!! Was the gasket! NReplaced with OEM and I am good To go! Was so worried not be able to see my temp! Still need to find a replacement audio warning (buzzer) but at least I can see my running temp now. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!
