Well, I got everything put back together from removing the heads. now I can't get it to start? Motor is turning and it's getting fuel and there is spark but it just won't fire! I did get a small backfire and a puff of smoke from the exhaust on the starboard side.

run a compression test on all cylinders, just to make sure valves are adjusted properly. this is actually a very common oops, even by the best sometimes. you should also be able to hear the compression as motor turns over, lack of compression sounds like a flat spot. if compression is good, double check static timing to make sure not 180 out or off at all

I have spark. I put it at TDC put the cap back on and then connected the wires to the cap in the correct firing order............all I got was a big backfire out of the carb. I'm doing to put it at TDC and pull the distributor and try again unless anyone has a better idea.

yep, could be 180 off with the distributor

backfire could also mean timing way off

You do realize, it takes more to fixing an engine than just having some tools and the ability to take things apart.
Look at this thread you started.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=333007 Like I said early on in that thread, there is nothing idiot proof in putting together and engine. If you don't know what you are doing, don't have a manual, don't understand the manual or what it's referring to, you don't have a snow balls chance in hell. of it starting.
A simple thing like being on #1 TDC ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE is a matter of either having the engine start or breaking things.
Did you have it right?

It takes a lot more than a desire and a forum to fix an engine.

I have the manual. I have a general idea of what I'm doing. I think When I removed the dist and reinstalled, my problem occured. I have a feeling I'm off by 180* on the dist.

If you are off 180? with the distributor, you can just about bet your valve adjustment is off by the same amount.

Re: Won't start?

being 180 out is a common goof. it happens. give it a shot, hopefully it fixes. and no, you don't need to have manuals, or all the knowledge to fix/figure things out. yes it helps greatly, but it can be done, and done right without. might take some research, some question asking, alot of trial and error teaching. good luck!:D
