I have had a few questions as to how my Canada trip went so let me tell all.(Well not ALL. I have to protect the guilty!!)
We went to Minnesota, not Canada. About 30 miles west of Grand Rapids,Mn.
Left my house at 6:30am and drove to Evansville,IN to pick up the guy that owns the lake house. Arrived at our destination in Minnnesota about 8:00PM that same day (Sunday May 31). We ate pre-made sandwiches and drank sodas and water on the drive to avoid delays on the way.
Woke up Monday morning and went to the local gas/bait/grocery market and got our licenses and bait, etc.
Fished for bass that first morning ,used mainly spinnerbaits. Smoked the bass. The three of us must have caught 20 each all over 2 or 3 pounds the first morning. Went to a different lake in the afternoon where the weeds were starting to come up. Switched to Paca Toad Seniors to drag them acrss the lily pads. Wow!! Nothing better than a top water bite in the middle of the afternoon.
Just a side note here: We all know that perfect spot, that certain log or lily pad where we just deep down believe that a bass is waiting and lurking. I see this log that's stuck in the bank but the lake portion of it is about 12 inches above the water. I cast a spinnerbait back towards the shore about 3 feet past where the tip of the log is hovering over the water surface. I slowly reel towards me, just knowing that a 4 pounder is waiting just under the water under the log. Two crank turns, three, and now now I'm just at that point where I can SEE IN MY MIND where that fish lives and I KNOW that he's going to strike..........NOW!!!!!!) Wham!! I hook set and the fight is on. I won't lie and say it was 10lbs,just a nice 4lb Minnesota early summer bass and I was thrilled. That same lake my fishing partner caught a 12Lb northern which we turned into fish chowder in a huge pot and ate from for two more days.
We actually kept some bass to eat as we never got to the grocery store until Wednesday. The house had 11 eggs,5 red potatos, and 2 oinions when we arrived. Between the crappie (story yet to come) and the bass, we had enough to eat.
Tuesday: Went to a crappie lake and kept 29 between the 3 of us. A few bass were caught and the occasional northern.
Wednesday: Another man joined us that lives in Minneapolis. Fished all day and FINALLY we go to the grocery store for eggs, bacon, pork chops, etc.
Thursday thru Sunday was a blur between all the different lakes and methods we used.
I think we fished 12 different lakes in the 7 days we were there. I had a great time with my fishing buddys and "cocktails" were served nightly once we were off the water and back home.
I had a lot better time then last year when I "caught" diabetes on the trip. Had a blood glucose level of 959 when I finally got home. Nauseau, ketoacidosis, urinary urges every 15 minutes, dry mouth, etc. Thank God that's over and done and now I know I'm insulin dependant I can handle it.
I hope to make another trip there in September.
