I have had this problem before but it seemed to work it self out. the motor has been running fine for a year. I was on the lake and it was running fine, slowed down and killed the engine to talk to another boat upon restart (started and idled fine) motor would never get back to top end, never get over 2700-3000 RPM. Thought at first it might be ignition coils and replaced them with 4 brand new ones I had on hand but no change. I was told it was most likely my CDI has gone bad and the motor is designed to basically limp in if the CDI goes bad... Any clues or suggestions or is there more info that you need. Thanks for your time

well before i went buying parts, i would do some trouble shooting. have you check compression and spark on all 4 cylinders? have you eliminated the likely hood of a contaminated carborator/s?

Re: 1997 Evinrude 115 SPL possible CDI problem

I don't have a compression guage but when I get home that is my next item to check, as far as spark, I haven't had someone else there to roll the motor over in order to check the spark. Like I said I had this problem before and it was a bad ignition coil but I have replaced those. I had them on hand. I have not checked the carbs but would think that would be highly unlikely since I check my gas routinely (actually take a sample to see if there is any water or "junk" in the fuel) and I had the carbs rebuilt last year... But I will check the carbs as soon as I get home. Thank you for your help... sure I will have more questions later.
