Stalling Problem

I have a 84 Sea Ray with a 350 Mercruiser, just purchased a couple of weeks ago. Put it in the water today, idel's fine, but as soon as I hit 2000 it stalls out. It has been sitting for a couple of years. My thoughts are that there is some water in the gas and the filters need changed. Anyone have any other ideas if thats not it?

Thanks

Re: Stalling Problem

FULL check, tune-up, filter change, fluid change, should be done asap, as you may not know when it was done last. gas has a shelf life of only a month or so just sitting, so gas should be drained, or at minimum, a fuel treatment product added.

I had similar problem
If there has been ethanol in the tank this tends to absorb water and make life difficult, separators do not work all that well als0 the carburettor may be gummy from water.I think it is water and you are on the right track

Bull Hockey ............... It may start degrading after a month, but year old and even 2 year old gas is usable, even the E-10. Yes, using a fuel stabilizer is a good idea when winterizing.

We aren't going to get that rumor started around here.

RUMOR? so you run old gas consistantly, with no problem then. no additives or nothing? and this is ok? and you use tranny fluid for motor oil too, right?

Re: Stalling Problem

Does it always stall out right at 2000 rpm? I mean, can you increase slowly beyond 2000? If you can get beyond 2000 when inching up slowly, it may be time for a carb rebuild as it sounds like the accelerator pump has gone out.

I had this problem the other day on my Rochester 2jet carb. I can idle up but the minute I try to apply sudden acceleration, she starves for fuel, loses power and backfires. If I back off, the rpms come right back. I'm waiting for a rebuild kit now.

Max, Start a new thread if you want about the gas, but do it in Boat topices, or non boating topics, but not here. Then both IO and outboard and automotive people can reply.

That was an odd statement now wasn't it. Had absolutely nothing to do with the fuel comments. Bet it made you feel good though, didn't it???????

Re: Stalling Problem

Thanks for your thoughts. I am going to start by draining out all 60 gallons of gas, changing the filters and refilling. I appriciate the advice.
