Hi Guys, i have a manual on the way, just trying to get a head start. I have an 57 or 58 can't remember which 35HP evinrude. I haven't owned it very long & am trying to figure out why it barely runs. it starts fairly well in the yard but when it gets in the river it will not keep running. it seems to be running very rich.
When I first got it fuel was running out of the jet in the carb throat. i figured the float needle was stuck..I took the carb apart to clean it but it looked spotless. still has the cork float. re-assembled & it was no longer pouring gas but still would not stay running. I had a boat mechanic tell me a base setting 1 & 1/2 turns out on the low speed & 3/4 open on the high. this had it running in the yard (still rich) but at least running...I took it to the river & it started a few times but kept dying... It has an inline electric fuel pump hooked to the pressurised system. could this be a problem? too much pressure? does anybody know of a carb swap that doesn't have adjustable jets? Maybe a jetski carb? I have an extra one line tank I could swap in.. Help please!

Thank You very much! I guess i'm lucky it didn't start on the river. That probably explains why the hull is in such good shape, this thing never ran right! I just got my manual, maybe i'll figure this thing out without bugging you guys too much..Thanks again!

Re: rigged evinrude

turned out to be a blown crank seal oil & gas mix on the points. i pulled the head just to check the cylinders had vertical scratches (broken rings) not sure how it ever ran:confused:

I replaced it with a 63 40hp evinrude selectric..got it going but the wiring has been replaced & hardwired with no quick disconnect. just have to figure which wires go to the generator & if it requires a voltage regulator..
This forum has been a big help..i spend lots of time reading..
Thanks guys!
