I am a total Midwest Yankee American. More western than anything I suppose if I had to say. If you took a map of just the 48 continental United States and made an X on it by drawing one line from Washington state to Florida and another line from Maine to California then the center of that X is about 50 miles from where I was born and grew up (in Kansas). I work for a company with headquartes in the USA and that has branches on all continents, and I talk with Australians and British colleagues all the time. I have had to communicate with Italian and Chinese folks as well.
With the Italian and Chinese we use email and translator software, but usually takes a day for all that to work out because of different time zones.
With the British it is like we are one country separated by a common language! We have a hard time with vernacular even though it is all in english. The British outlook on life seems to be enough different than "ours" that the points of reference in certain type of conversations make it difficult to get on the same page.
And it is somewhat the same with Australians, we both have slight pauses in between responses as we work thru the different pronunciation and usage of words and syntax. The Australian take on life seems to be more like the "western" USA that I am used to so it is easier in most ways than with the Brits. That company is named Cigweld, located in Preston, Victoria.
I bond easier and have a lot more fun with the Aussies I must admit....
