My timing belt also broke in the driveway while trying to start it, AQ131D, (I just bought the boat as a project and have never ran it) I have the manual but it says to remove the 6 bolts on the crank pulley and remove it, but mine only has the one center bolt, do i still need to remove it. I lined up the timing marks on the camshaft and intermediate shaft pulley with no problems but do I use the mark on the crankshaft drive belt pulley and put it on TDC or do I need to take off that pulley and use the mark on the crankshaft timing belt pulley? What do the mark on the crank timing belt pulley look like, is it a notch on the outside of the pulley, which I can see with the drive belt pulley on, or is there a dot like the rest of the pulleys have and where is the mark on the engine block and what does it look like? Can you give me ball park figure where the timing belt pulley mark is in relation to the engine block (12:00, 6:00, 3:00, etc.)? Thanks for the help and just one more question, can I use an automotive valve cover gasket? Thanks again and aloha!!!!

6 bolts hold the v-belt pull on right? The center bolt holds the timing belt pully on which doesn't get removed.

There is a notch on the back side of the timing belt pully that should line up with a raised fin on the case. Looks to be almost at 12:00. That should be TDC, hopefully on the compression stroke. Do you know how to confirm your on the compression stroke by putting a thumb over the spark plug hole on #1 cyl.?

Auto valve cover gaskets are fine.:)

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the quick reply. I do know how to find the compression stroke. My v-belt pulley does not have the six bolts, it only has one. Here is a link to two photo's of the pulley to show you what I mean. Do I still need to take the v-belt pulley off and are the timing marks on the timing pulley the same as you stated earlier? I don't see any raised mark on the engine block at the 12:00 position. Again, thank you!

Exactly what manual do you have? Not OEM I bet.

Re: Volvo AQ131D Timing Belt HELP!!!

I did my aq 151 a few months ago. What I did was I lined up the timing marks on the belt with the one on the top and the one on the side. As for the crank, (mine only has one nut too) Before you take that piece off that has the timing marks on it line the crank up on TDC. Just rotate till at 0 degrees. Then check by sicking finger in spark plug hole 1 and see if the piston is at the top. Then carefully take the aluminum peice off that has the timing marks on it and put the belt on. Now comes the fun part, put the timing cover back on and see if it all lines up. Top and side pullies should still be at tdc, and the mark on the crank should line up with the 0 degree mark. If your off, just take the cover off and adjust 1 or two ribs and check again. I had it right after a few tries.

Good luck

Don S, thanks for the help, you're right, I don't have an OEM manual, I have a Clymer's manual that covers motors from 68-93 and a Seloc manual, not OEM, maybe i'll invest in one. Neither one of these manuals really cover my motor specifically. Do I have to get an OEM directly from Volvo?

Robjen, thanks for reply, I'll try it that way and let you guys know.

I can't say Thank you enough, the OEM manual actually looks just like my motor, it should be breeze now (famous last words). I should have asked a week ago, before I bought the Seloc manual. Is there an OEM manual for the 275 outdrive. Again the two manuals I have are pretty vague on the removal of the outdrive. I wanted to change out the u-joint and bellows. Thank you

This motor has not been started in a couple of years. Any tip to look out for or try? I thought first I'd pull the plugs and spray a little bit of 2cycle oil mixed with gas and let it set , then try turning over the engine with a ratchet to at least brake it free. What safety measures should come next?

Free spirit, If you want help with your boat, start a new thread of your own.:)

If you haven't figured it out yet, if you click on the link in this thread, you can download the manual.
