Anyone have these speakers?

The OEM cassette AM/FM radio is still in the Bayliner (says US Marine on the face!) and it is all I really need. But the Speakers are shot, and the grills are missing. I have been looking for a cheap set of speakers with grills just to fill in the holes where the old speakers were.

Today I came across these. Genuine Marine Grade Speakers! Cheaper (with free shipping) than anything at Walmart or K Mart or Advance Auto. For $26 its hard to pass them up. Just wondering if anyone has these on their boat and how they sound.

PYRAMID MDC7 120 Watt 6.5" Car Audio Speakers.

"....These 6.5 inch speakers handle 120 watts of rock solid power (per pair)! These are completely waterproof and are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in both boat and car applications...."

Re: Anyone have these speakers?

I went ahead and ordered a pair. Should be here later this week and I'll let you know how well they sound and how good the construction appears to be. Here is the Ebay ad if anyone is interested.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120440519552

BTW, their claim that they sell for $300 is a little bit of an exaggeration, seeing as these can be found at various online retailers for about $25. With shipping it typically comes to $35. So $26.88 shipped is a good deal.

I have those speakers in the boat. I also have that same brand in 5.25" size. Their sound quality is pretty decent. They have been soaking wet several times and still perform well. For the money they are a good buy.

Re: Anyone have these speakers?

The only thing that I would see wrong with them is that there is no built in tweeter.

I purchased these and also installed these

and tested them out while washing the boat and having the stereo blasting.

I didn't realize they were not a two way system until you mentioned it!!! Checked the OEM speakers, and they have a frequency response range even less than these new ones, so these should be an improvement. Plus no more rust stains running down the vinyl. :D(which cleaned up completely by applying CLR undiluted to the vinyl)

I was looking to replace the two speakers in my cockpit area, the plastic cones are warped but they still play. I think their 8" speakers and they say Clarion three-way on them. What does three-way imply???? And can I use something like what you getting to replace what I have?

What does three-way imply????

3-way = triaxle = 3 speakers in one.
2-way = coaxle = 2 speakers in one.

You usually get a better freq range with triaxles because you have 3 separate speakers handling different portions of the spectrum.
Woofer + midrange + tweeter = wider freq response (in most cases).

2-ways have the midrange and tweeter combined into one.

You also want to look at the SPL rating or sensitivity as it is sometimes referred to. The higher the db # the better.

2 ways still run the midrange off the main speaker. 8khz is an average crossover frequency for the tweeter portion, everything below is handled by the main. MOST decent 2 way speakers will sound better than a 3 way. Would you rather have a single good tweeter, or 2 cheap ones? Another problem is frequency transitions between speakers. The fewer the better.

I did competition car audio for many years, it was rare to see any 3 way main speakers, the only exception was a polk system which had two identical tweeters, so it was still more of a 2 way system because they had the same crossover points

Anyway, back to the OP... pyle speakers are made by jensen. Bottom of the barrel, but usually fairly decent construction and will stand up fairly well. I'd use them for a boat in a heartbeat.

I was just trying to keep it simple.;)
You forgot to add/explain the importants of SPL when it relates to speakers and the other components in the system.:p

i used to work in stereo shops a long time ago as a friend owned one of the largest chains in western Canada. We carried the pyramid line back then. All I can say is you get what you pay for.

Re: Anyone have these speakers?

Speakers are in. Mind you they are being driven by a low watt OEM US Marine branded AM/FM casette radio from 1984........ Not exactly cutting edge technology.:D

Well, they sound just fine. Actually, they sound much better than the original speakers. And my 19 year old son thinks they are amazing for what they are!!! I'm actually cool! (or he's just being kind).

The old speakers were Audio Vox, (model BAY6) with a wopping wattage rating of 8 watts max and 5 watts continuous, and a frequency response of 80 to 10,000 Hz.

The new speakers are 120 watts, frequency 45-16,000 Hz. But better yet, they are all plastic. Plastic cones, plastic frames, and the magnets are inside a plastic housing. So I shouldn't worry about water making rust stains in front of the speakers ever again!

Good for you, I am looking for set of 6x9 s as well. Unfortunately the only marine speakers I can find around here are branded DUAL, who I`ve never heard of. Unfortunately the two 6 inch Jenson`s aren`t quite enough for a 20`boat...

Anyone use the DUALs

Sounds like you got a great deal and for a boat, they are the best of both worlds, cheap and sounds good. Just remember that it is 120 watts per pair so each speaker can have 60 watts. Just an fyi when you go buy that new radio head to drive those fancy speakers. ;)

Re: Anyone have these speakers?

I went with a new Sony Deck CDX-M60UI MARINE, It's awesome. I added 2 sets of Polk Audio DB 6501 6.5 2-ways, they rock the boat and sounds like I have woofers. I haven't even added the amp or the subs. The speakers can be bought off of eBay for 126.00 for 2 sets. I think the radio was 165.00 with free shipping. I also added the wired remote with the screen to the back. I am slowly building the stereo. All this was with the recommendations of a professional installer. He didn't try to sell me anything and I did the install myself. He advised that that's what he would go with if it was his boat, so far I couldn't be happier.

DUAL used to make high end home stereo equipment. Most famous for their high tech turn tables in the 70's. I would expect that they have moved into the speaker market seeing as turn tables aren't as in big demand as they used to be.

Re: Anyone have these speakers?

Just tonight I finished installing my stereo system in the boat. Used those exact speakers mounted in the bow bulkhead. For $20 I couldn't resist them.

The head unit is a JVC putting out 20w (rms) per channel into 4 ohms. I powered it up and popped in a favorite CD. Turned the volume up to 25 (out of 50) and the neighbors complained:(. Speakers have really good base response and crisp high frequencies. Sounded very good to me, especially for the price. Hope they hold up.
